Whats the bust bang for buck laser printer?

I understand that the NEC 870 was considered the best but is being phased out and is no longer in production. So what printer is best after the NEC?

I currently have a Xerox Docuprint P8 but am looking for something better. Something that can be found $250 price range or less.

Get the NEC 870 if you can still find it. One of the best printer's I've used
Never had any problems with the paper feed. Great for $130! (Buy.com DOTD awhile back)

I am a bit weary about getting a Brother printer. I never appreciated there product line but I'll do some more research into the 1240.

403Forbidden I am worried about driver support for the NEC 870 since it is going to be a discontinued product its likely driver support for future operating systems like Whistler will be non-existant.

What's your problem with the DocuPrint?

My main problem is no proper Win2K drivers. I can use the Windows NT 4.0 drivers but it messes up some charecters. Also the cartridge per costs $80 for 3000 pages and printers like the NEC cost $80 for 6000 pages.

Finality - I have also been weary of Brother products also but I was willing to take a chance since it only cost me 77 cents (thank you MSN!).

So far I have nothing but good things to say about this compact, fast, high quality, trouble free laser printer. Although I wish it had an LCD display with words instead of a few blinking lights but other than that it's great. Nice small footprint on the desk, although I haven't tried printing envelopes yet.

The next best printer is the HP which starts out at $699, so for the value and quality you simply cannot beat the Brother HL-1240.

Unlike some of the NEC 870's this Brother doesn't have that paper jam feature

Hey Joe My roommate has the NEC 870, great printer but its being discontinued. BTW the 1440 has a $25 rebate on it as well.
