Been out of the computer loop for years. Bought me a 21" CRT for $1200 back in the day. Currently using a 24" TN, I was wanting to upgrade to a 24, 27 or 30 IPS ultrasharp dells.

Been using work laptop for years, so can't really buy my own laptop anymore. I wanted to upgrade my home desktop, I read the back to school article and decided to just build that ITX computer mentioned.

The chip is the i3-2100t with the HD 2000 video. Can that thing push out a picture to a 27 or 30 inch ultrasharp dell in those resolutions. I plan on using the computer for just word processing and surfing the web, no games obviously.

Thank you

It can support up to 2560x1600 res if you're using DisplayPort as the video output. Otherwise, it only supports single-link DVI and HDMI, both of which are limited to 1920x1200. Basically, if your motherboard does not have DisplayPort output, no.

Since you're looking for a new IPS monitor I recommend you check out the new Dell U2412M. It's 24", 1920x1200 res, it has superior contrast and similar color accuracy to the U2410, even being 6-bit + dithering vs 8-bit, but you lose some features and you may get a bit more backlight bleeding. The good thing is, it's at $400 vs $500 for the U2410.

Just wanted to double check. I found that the zotac mini itx motherboards have either a mini display port with adapter or a full display port on them. So my puny HD2000 on the i3-2100t could push out the resolution for the 30" Dell IPS monitor. Also, you think they are going to come out with an update for the monitor soon, it was release about this time last year.

I really doubt it. The Dell U3011 was released on September 2010 and Dell typically updates their highest-end monitors every 2-3 years. There's been no reports of a successor coming, probably because there's no newer 30" 10-bit IPS panels to have come out and so they wouldn't have anything major to update. The only real update they could do is add RGB LED backlighting, and that's not gonna make a big difference at all.

You sure you need a $1200 monitor, though?

Thanks for the help, I'm just using the computer for basic things but I just like a nice monitor and I have some spare cash, not meant for retirement, so I thought I'd splurge on this. My posture has been getting horrible because I have to hunch over to see the screen, so I'm hoping that a big 30" will solve it. And I figure, these monitors are used for years so it seems like a better investment in terms of quickly outdated hardware than most things.

Well, that is true. If you see it as an investment to keep for many years then all the power to you.
