Normally laptop prices get much higher the smaller the laptop is. Now, if you are willing to sacrifice some speed, you can a small laptop cheap.

$500 laptops are 6+ lbs and massive. Subnotebooks this tiny (but faster) generally cost well over $1,000.

The flash memory hard drive also means it's less fragile than other subnotebooks, so you can carry it around and use it while powered up.

To me it looks like a good living room laptop.

I'm torn between this, the nokia 810 tablet, and Amazon's Kindle book reader for a new toy.

The Nokia internet tablets are nice, but the screen is too small for viewing from more than a foot or so away without zooming and they're kind of slow (fine for web browsing, but flash content will bring it to its knees). Between the EEE and N810, I'd definitely get the EEE. Don't really know anything about the Kindle, though, so can't comment on that. :)

I had a Nokia N800 but I got the EEE. If you have any questions, let me know. The EEE must be short for swEEEt. I have not enjoyed a gadget as much as this thing.

IMHO, it's a mixture of a Fisher-Price Laugh, Smile & Learn and a My First Sony...

Except they can watch pron on it... ;)

Nigerian schoolchildren who received laptops from a U.S. aid organisation have used them to explore pornographic sites on the Internet, the official News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported on Thursday.

NAN said its reporter had seen pornographic images stored on several of the children's laptops.

"Efforts to promote learning with laptops in a primary school in Abuja have gone awry as the pupils freely browse adult sites with explicit sexual materials," NAN said

I don't know. Back when it was $200 and had a 4gb SSD, yeah, that was pretty interesting. Now that it's like $400, it's not much of a deal.

IMHO, people get way too excited over that 4gb SSD - it's slow, and you can make your own for $50. Just get an Addonics direct-insertion adapter and a 4gb CF card of your choice. If you're willing to go closer to $90, you could put together something with DMA support. In fact, Addonics even has a dual-card adapter, so you could do RAID 1 (or RAID 0, if you're feeling lucky).

It was supposed to be $200. At that price it would have been a MUST BUY for a lot of people. But they jacked the price up (200%!) and it still retained the hype.

Because $400 is still a good price for such a compact PC. I can't help but think that people wouldn't be bitching nearly as much if the $200 price rumor hadn't ever surfaced.
