What's the big deal with reposts?

I constantly see people cry repost on like 1/5 of threads and they get closed. What is the big deal if it was already posted at one point? Video, news article etc. I don't really get the big deal. This is the only forum I've seen where it's considered such a big deal where threads actually get closed for it.

Just wondering.

There's enough clutter in the forums that we don't need repeats of the same shit. It keeps things clean, and all discussions of one topic in one place. What's so complicated?

they used to say it wasted bandwidth. Now I think its just a matter of it being annoying.

Plus its an easy postcount++

True, I can understand if something was posted in the same time period and is still an active discussion, but why bump a 1 year old thread and not just start a new thread, even if it's the same subject. Chances are after 1 year nobody saw it, and if they did, well they can skip over it and move on.

The more discussion that goes on in a forum, the more revenue it generates, more or less.

I got spanked for bumping old threads because someone had posted the exact same thread.

Its a Mod YMMV thing. Its not the hill I want to die on, so I just go along with it.

You never look cooler than when you are first to capitalize and bold an "R" in your post. It is a "I've been here forever and have accumulated so much experience viewing threads that I can immediately claim I've seen a similar post before".

If you could somehow insinuate that you are so above current pop culture that you don't even know what the joke/reference is referring to you could potentially cause the entire forum to implode.

Thankfully no one has yet been able to insert an "R" in the post "Who?".

I agree with the op. This obsession by some with reposts... weird.
It’s like people spend hours researching to see if at some other time
in the past 50 years, someone already started a simular thread on the same subject.

I don't get the big deal.
It’s just typing. It’s not like we’re performing brain surgery here, or saying anything that really matters.
And as for taking up space? I think starting a thread asking what song are u listening too right now, or book are u reading, or what is your favorite toilet paper, or pictures of that pimple on your ass, wastes a lot more space (if space is that valuable in the first place).
And we all know, there are more than plenty of ass pimple picture threads, here on this site. 😀

I don't mind reposts. Especially when someones "original" thread degraded to some penis envy discussion. And most of the threads do degenerate to the place where u can not remember what the original topic even was.

And with reposts, you can gather a whole new or different viewpoint.

Like in a topic "Michael Jackson Dead".
I’d rather see several threads going in different directions on that subject, than reading 250 pages of replies for the one and only thread, where the topic degraded into some penis envy chit chat over who owns the most Michael Jackson albums.

Let the reposts live!!!

It penalizes people for not searching. If there was no penalty, nobody would search first, and you'd have 10 discussions going about the exact same thing. Irritating for everyone involved...

I agree. It's just the thing to do here...

I say that if it's not on the first or second page, there's nothing wrong with re-posting it. Most people aren't here 24/7 and don't catch everything.

it should be a rule that the original thread should be linked when claiming repost

oh and, repost

Yep I agree. If someone cries repost, at least make the effort in proving so by posting the original link.

I also agree they should just be merged especially if proper discussion actually occurred in the repost thread.

There should maybe be a rule to how new a thread needs to be before a similar thread is considered a repost, as well.

If someone posted a funny flash video, then a month later it gets posted again, that should not be a repost, unless it's something obviously seen by everyone, like "All your base".

I think it should only be allowed to call repost on something that's still on the first page. Bumping a previous topic (especially one that's YEARS old) just to point out the new one is a repost should earn a warning.

This.

Plus, when a mod locks a thread for being a repost, it should be a rule that he/she links to the original thread in the locking message. Something like...
Repost - AnandTech Repost Mod
...would be just fine. It's the closest thing to a redirect that we've got AFAIK.
