whats the big deal over PPPoE and static IPs?

pppoe provides a dynamic ip. so, your ip will change every time you log in. static ip is good for being a server, while a bit less secure since attackers will know your ip address. for most purposes, dynamic ip will be fine unless you are web/ftp serving.

I was checking out Earthlink DSL and they're offering a PPoE or static Ip (not sure if theres an extra charge for static). Another question: where does a company like Covad figure into the DSL market? Is it the actual DSL provider and Earthlink would be one of the ISPs?

covad sucks donkey ba....um yea

I depending on where you live you might not want to get covad, i got a friend that works for an ISP that does its dsl thru covad...it is always going down it seems, not very reliable at all. check DSLreports to find out how service is in your area.

Also CLECs (like covad) are generally more expensive that the ILECs (like SwBell, PacBell, etc) because they have to "rent" the equipment from the ILEC thus have to charge more to make a profit...
