What's the big deal about noise?

I wish my system was more quiet. Whenever I watch DVDs or listen to music with a wide dynamic range, the whirring in the background is REAL annoying. Most manifested when I watch a movie such as a drama, the damn buzzing of my Pioneer 16x Slot DVDROM gets on my nerves. Which is why I always mention that when people praise the damn drive in all those "Which DVDROM should I get" threads.

Thanks for the replies. There are a lot of good answers. I have worked in anechoic chambers that were so quiet that you could hear your own heart beat and it about drove me nuts. To each his own.

I program for a living and I work in small 8x8 office with 2 computers. within 8 foot of my office there are 10 more machines. 9 hrs a day 5 days a week I sit in this room and listen to growling of the cheap-ass fans they use on these systems and it starts to get to you... its even worse that I am sensitive to high pitched sounds.
Before they remodeled and I was in a nice big space over on the other side of the building, all by my lonesome... everything was groovy...

Its just noise saturation. Some people have a higher threshold, and some just work\live in environments where the noise or stress levels overwhelm you and you just want some silence...

Funny thing is, my main source of transportation is a motorcycle, and I love to escape the whirring fan noises by going for a ride... you know, on the noisy bike on the noisy streets... ahh how relaxing.

I am personally not bothered by the airconditioner noises at all. They are actually kinda soothing, however computers make extremely annoying whining highpitched noises that are unbearable. That is why i cannot stand a loud computer.

It's been kinda mentioned above, but I think that a significant number of people on this forum are college students, or other people that have to sleep in a small room with their computers.

-- At least we don't have to sleep with a fat noisy wife! 🙂

I have to agree about the watching a DVD stuff. When there should be a totally quiet part in the movie, it ain't.
Don't get me wrong. I'm all for power, etc. But I don't need any more unnecessary noise in my life--I work where it is noisy all day and quiet is a blessing to me. Besides, any noise starts my ears ringing like a m0therf**ker, and it doesn't stop until after I go to sleep.
