What's the big deal about Half-Life 2

I was previously pretty excited for Half-Life 2 to come out, but I only found out about two weeks ago that there will be no multiplayer for Half-Life 2 (actual multiplayer based on HL2, not including CS Source etc).

When it really boils down to it, isn't monday just a single player release that will take x hours to beat then HL2 is over? Or does monday signify when the real work on mods can begin. Also, is there any chance anyone can clarify why HL2 is considered a very moddable game, in comparison to say, Doom 3?

Does anyone possibly know if there's someone out there that's making a HL2 deathmatch type of game, similar to HL1's multiplayer?

I have no doubt a mod will be made for HL2 that is like TFC, or HLDM.

What sort of timeframe is realistic to make one? Of course it depends on how much stuff they need to code for the mod, and how many people are working on it, but how about a ballpark figure? ;)

hl1 was extremely moddable... though that also made it a bit insecure.

hopefully hl2 won't be too shabby either.

I would assume Valve would eventually release TF2, they also have DoD: Source and CS: Source.
And there's the already linked to HL2DM Mod in the works.
Plus numerous other mods.

Is it true that the physics gun won't be in HL2? Read somewhere right now that it was removed. The one that can pick mattresses up and stuff

From HL2Central.net:
A yet unnamed weapon, confusing to some there have been 2 versions of manipulator. In part of the e3 video we see the demonstrator using a weapon with a blue beam to move mattresses, tables and bodies. This weapon was for demonstrational and testing purposes only, it will not feature in the full game. The yellow equivalent (see screenshot) however will. This weapon sparks curiosity in the minds of many fans. The weapon features two main functions, these are to pick up (manipulate) objects and to project them. In the e3 video we see a prime example of the capabilities of such a device and Gordon rips a radiator out the wall to use as a shield and later projects it killing his victim. The prongs on the Manipulator will open up when pointed at an object that is able to be picked up, and Valve has told us that there is a weight limit to how much you can manipulate.
