What's the better tech for gaming 120hz or IPS?

For fast moving FPS shooters, 120hz is most important. For slower single player games IPS for sure.

OILFIELDTRASH- report back on that monitor. I hear the glossy screen makes it look crisper. I have an Alienware aw2310 on the way and cant wait for it.

120Hz really does look awesome even regular Windows use is super smooth. Played TF2 and holy crap it looked like a different game. Played Crysis and Metro 2033 and didn't notice anything.
 
Crysis can't really reach 120fps with current technology. I played the game on minimum settings with an i7 @ 4ghz and IIRC it was averaging about 80ish.

I'm happy enough with monitor technology. 120hz brings us close enough to the CRT world, without a lot of the drawbacks. I'll still miss 200hz from back in the day, I'm being serious when I say the immersion factor was just insane. Smoothest 50 polygons ever. It really felt like you were in control of everything, not just moving a mouse around. Of course most games couldn't even support it, and you had to overclock the ps2 port or you would get basically stuck at 125.
 
I'd love to have 120 hz, but there's no way i could give up my 3007WFP.

I've had it for 4+ years now, & hope for many more.

When they have 120 hz 2560x1600 IPS or better panels/tech then i'll consider upgrading...
 
I use a M-PVA. I prefer color quality with awesome viewing angles with a little slower response (I see no difference, even in fast paced games). Which is why I will never get a TN again. It's night and day when you compare the viewing angles, color quality. Then again I could be bias in the fact that my computer table requires my monitor be above eye level which is garbage on a TN. That and the fact I use my monitor for TV and Movie entertainment where I want to be further back and maybe at a different angle. 120hz seems nice but not necessary at the moment IMO. 3D glasses whether it's movies or games, seem like nothing more than a fad with small entertainment value (reminds me of the blue/red glasses long ago, and Virtualboy).
 
I don't think that monitor will be able to handle ghost free 3d video. Response time (not rated response time) matters a whole lot more for active shutter 3d than 2d. Because of this, 2d 120hz may be up to par, but 3d 120hz will look pretty bad.

Personally I am glad LG is willing to risk putting a non-3d 120hz monitor on the market. My dream is for the controller to run much faster than the panel can support, extracting every ounce of performance from the LCD and creating fluent images at the same time.

There is no reason (other than current bandwidth) that we can't have a 300hz controller plugged into current 120hz panels. Relatively speaking, the image displayed for 3.33ms would be ghosted pretty bad compared to what its supposed to look like, but the overall experience would be a near fluent picture.

Ups just dropped it off this afternoon.

Edit -

Monitor (and stand) is all matte black aside from the edges around the screen which are glossy. Screen itself is also matte. No wire management built in the stand. OSD buttons are recessed inside the bottom edge instead of sticking out from the front. There's a Planar logo top mid and model number bottom right and neither are distracting. There's also a 3d Vision Nvidia sticker on the bottom left which thankfully is easily removed. Looks wise it's pretty nice, imo.

I have slight backlight leakage in the bottom right corner and along the top edge. It's not bad at all (slightly worse along the top). Horizontal angles are better than I expected. Vertical angles...well it's a tn panel. I have no dead/stuck pixels.

Color was slightly cold (blue tint) out of the box. Monitor has a 6500k, 7500k, and 9300k preset along with a user setting. I just used the Nvidia settings to tweak it though, and I would say I managed to get it reasonably close to the default colors on the px2611w (IPS). Colors are better than I expected but ymmv. The image itself is nice and crisp. (This comparison was just done side by side looking at my desktop wallpaper).

Dragging a window around was a huge improvement in fluidity. At a reasonable speed I could still read the letters and there's no way in hell I could at 60hz. I'll post gaming thoughts later when I get the chance to play something.

I do miss 16:10 and the extra real estate though.

Well I got around to using the ASUS VG236HE and overall I'm happy.

First I've got to say yes 120hz does add a little more fluidity to the experience but I was a little disappointed by it. I guess I was expecting more. I think if we ever get 240hz monitors then you'll really get that smooth natural fluid motion. I just don't think 120hz is there but definitely an improvement over 60hz.

Second The main reason I will be keeping this monitor is because it's got a great screen. It had a little backlight bleed and the very top and very bottom but it was not bad and not noticeable while in normal use. Colors seemed to pop and overall had a very natural look to them. It was a huge improvement from the Dell I was using.

I would rate this monitor 8/10. I haven't had a chance to use this monitor for what it was really meant for which is 3d gaming ( I don't have the nvidia kit) but from just a normal use and 2d gaming experience it's a great monitor.

@Lava Yeah I switched to 120hz. I even went back and forth between 60 and 120hz for like 30min just comparing the two. I liked it just wasn't as much of a difference as I thought it would be. I do appreciate you recommending the screen cause it does rock as far as screen quality goes which is what I was mainly looking for. The 120hz is just icing on the cake.

now you just gotta push that I7 higher to get your framerates up high enough to make some more frames😉 I got mine at 4.01 no sweat and there are a number of games that will do over a 100Fps average
 
I have a BenQ XL2410T 120Hz monitor as well as the Dell U2711. The image clarity of the U2711 is certainly amazing but it simply cannot compete with the responsiveness and motion clarity of the BenQ. I almost can't stand playing games on 60Hz panels anymore, I used to be immune to the image tearing but now I can't stand it, and vsync only makes the latency of 60Hz even worse.

Of course slower paced games (RPGs etc) and games capped at 60fps (Mirror's Edge) I might switch to the U2711 for its vastly superior IQ, but for the most part I stick to faster paced shooters that make the 120Hz panel the obvious choice for me.

Can any of you with the 120Hz monitors give feedback about video playback? I'm currently debating changing monitors, and I'm most interested in the 120Hz for 2D and video playback.

I have a 32" LCD TV that does 24Hz playback and I felt that the motion looked noticeably better than on the other monitor.

I think I can live with the poor viewing angles, and possibly the color (since it seems like with calibration its ok, although the banding might be problematic I haven't seen anyone talk about how bad it is on some of these) in exchange for the improved motion.

Yeah, it would probably be dependent on Blu-Ray, as I think most other video is 30/60fps. I really wish I could try one of these monitors out, but the closest place that even might have one on display is over an hour away and I'm not sure that they'd let me really try it out much (likely would be setup to show off 3D).
