What makes it better then a traditional LCD?

It makes it better then Twisted nematic (TN) panels which have fast response times but poor colour and poor viewing angles.

IPS has slower response times but more accurate colour and very good viewing angles (colours wont be washed out when you look at it from the top, sides, or bottom)

There are other types but TN and IPS are the main ones, there are subgroups to IPS you may be interested in if so you can look here for more information and look at all types of panels.

lol, I wasn't referring to Multigpu microstuttering thank you. I was referring to "flickering" associated with a lower refresh rate. I hesitate to say flicker casue I sense that you are now gonna tell me lcd's don't flicker. Sigh...........

LCDs don't really flicker in the same sense as CRTs. Most of the backlighting on LCDs using CCFL operate at over 200hz, and its completely independent of the refresh rate of the monitor.

That being said, I think you will be happy with your decision. I can't play games at 60hz, its just too choppy. I always roll my eyes when people say "buttery smooth 60fps". Although they probably roll their eyes when I say I love my TN monitor. Different strokes for different folks.

Looking forward to my 120hz planar next week. I currently have their 26" ips for comparison.

every game is different but some are smooth at 30fps. its more of the game engine then the fps itself but nearly every game I have played is smooth beyond 40-50 fps.

120 Hz makes a difference but I personally don’t think it offsets the advantages of 30” + 2560x1600 + IPS.
Agreed.

There's nothing like the resolution or image quality IMO of a 30" 2560x1600 monitor. If you're staying at ~24", then go for the 120Hz. I also suppose it depends on what kinds of games you play and why you game. I really enjoy visuals, and therefore chose a monitor that gives me the best visuals. 120Hz is nice, but no where near necessary for me to game, but until they make a 30" 2560x1600 120Hz monitor I'll be staying where I am.

I would like the smoother feel of 120hz instead of the annoying judder when simply just moving things around. I am sick of poor angles and dithering/color banding that is more likely on TN panels though but all 120hz monitors are TN. also the back light bleed really pisses me off in dark scenes but I think even expensive LCDs have that.

What I *really* want are better black levels. My 2209WA is great, but playing games like Dead Space 2 makes me realize just now much more immersive things could be with something like OLED (I think?).

heck yes. I was getting so pissed at trying to play Dead Space 2 on my lcd that I actually broke out the crt. piss poor black levels and back light bleed can ruin a game like that. in some spots, Dead Space 2 also had the worst color banding I have ever seen but sadly my crt could only partially help out with that.

it looks like I will be playing Amnesia on my crt too...

My girlfriend(soon to be fiance, she doesn't know about the ring yet ;) ) surpised me with it for Christmas since she respects my enjoyment of technology.

Congrats. I just got engaged not too long ago. My Fiance was shockingly supportive of my choice to get a new GPU (6870 on the way). She's almost anti-tech though.

We'll make it work!

If you're sick of poor angles, dithering colors and back light bleed, it may be wise to wait for more maturity here.

I bought that a couple months ago and it sucked. 120Hz was awesome but the quality of the panel was really bad. Horrible viewing angles and really bad backlight bleed. I returned it and I'm waiting for later this year so better quality stuff will come out.

Zero,

Really? I don't have any complaints about it at all. Maybe i just have lower standards

Imho,

The angles and back light are tough but the 120hz aspects may be worth it for the improved 2d for gaming and flexibility of Stereo3d. Technology is always a balance and trade-offs, but for me, like to see back light and angles improve, and also to see cross-talk improve with Stereo 3d. Just needs to evolve and mature more but the 120hz choice is very welcomed, indeed, for its strengths.

I just finished Dead Space 2 and it was awesome. These are perfect examples of why I stress the importance of IQ and IPS panels. It doesn't matter if your image refreshes at 120Hz if it stinks to begin with.

Personally, I feel 120hz panels work the best for people who play a lot of online fps/rts or similar face pace games. I switched from a 24" mva to a 120hz panel and I'll never go back. For me, being able to accurately hit a target is far more important than image quality. If I played mostly single player games then I'd opt for a panel with better IQ.

Well I'll report back in a couple days my impressions of the asus 120hz monitor. It was a gut wrenching battle between it and the u2410 waged in my mind. In the end it came down to the fact I didn't want to purchase a 60hz monitor when the fact is it's a dying tech. I'd probably be in the same boat next year at this time since I believe 3d is gonna get bigger as it gets cheaper and developers start using it more. I was bored and started dragging windows across my screen and watched it get all blurry and distorted. I thought to myself man I wonder if my games look like this and I just don't pay attention anymore cause I'm use to it.

Will have the monitor tomorrow thanks to Amazon prime account.:) Monitor is $350 at the egg. Amazon price is $341 and since I have a prime account 1 day shipping is $5. I get the same monitor for $4 less than newegg and shipped next day. Gotta love amazon.:)
