What's the better game for a solo player?

Unreal Gold or Unreal Tournament

I had thought that Unreal Tournament was only for multi-play, but someone here told me that it has a single player capability as well.

So which would you recommend? (I saw them in a bargin bin and am trying to decide which to buy).

Thanks again for your feedback.

UT single player is against bots. Unreal gold has a single player game plus bot play. UT is a decent multiplayer game, but Unreal gold is a pretty lousy single player game--especially compared to current games like Undying or No One Lives Forever or the immortal halflife.

Unreal Gold has a very nice storyline and plot for the single player mode (something about crash landing on an alien planet and finding your way out) whereas UT is your standard bot matches. I'd go with Unreal Gold personally.

Thanks for the info. I think I will give Unreal Gold a try then. (story and FPS). Of course, you have to realize that the last FPS that I played (and have yet to finish) is Dark Forces 2: Jedi Knight, so I am a bit behind the curve with respect to the latest games.

Now watch, I get there and all that's left is Unreal Tournament!

Unreal has a good storyline(much better than Quake2, not as good as Half Life), great graphics, great music, good ambience. If you haven't played it, it's worth getting IMO. Should be able to get it really cheap too.

Ya, I enjoyed the storyline too.

Of course you really have to take the time to read all the messages that pop up. If you didn't read any of them then I imagine it would be boring.

The single player really gets going about half way through the game and the last couple levels are REAL cool. I remember the first time I played "The Darkening" I was shidding a brick. :)

Advancing a game purely through messages? Well, system shock 2 did that, but it also had scripted events and an immersive atmosphere. Undying does that too, but again, scripted events and atmosphere. Unreal started something, but it still looks and behaves like an amoeba.

Undying, Deus Ex, NOLF, Star Trek Elite Force, Sin, Shogo, you name it, more fun than unreal gold/classic.

Ya you should realy try deus ex. Dont bother with the game of the year edition, all the extra stuff(mostly multiplayer stuff) you can get for free on the net(legal too). You should realy try deus ex it's alot better for single player than jedi knight witch has beter single player than unreal and UT.

Thanks for the input. I picked up Unreal Gold for $5 at Staples. Someone else had been there and bought 3 of the 5 Unreal Tournaments and left the one Unreal Gold (for me) so the buying public has also spoken.

Well, this adds to my collection of other unplayed classics. Funny you should mention your list of better FPS games 'cause here's my collection of unplayed games that are gathering dust (for now):

Half-Life, Star Trek Elite Force, NOLF, System Shock 2, Thief the dark project...

Thanks again for the info!

Rich: Did Unreal install over your porn or something? :D

As Rich mentioned, Sin and Shogo are 2 other games you should get for your collection.

Nah, I got it for free when I bought my Voodoo3, and while it was pretty, I got bored 3/4 through the game and only played bot matchs (loved that Tundra map). When the coupon for UT came through, I was damn happy. Games have advanced tremendously since then--hell, unreal classic requires a pentium 166 mmx on the box :p
