Promise all the way. The boards from Asus and MSI will have one.

I had no problems with the KT7A.. total satisfaction with the Highpoint RAID controller. If you look at Highpoint v. Promise comparison at Highpoint's web site, you will see a slight edge in performance for the High Point, Promise makes no such calims on their site.

The difference is not significant, really. I'ld choose some other reason to pick a RAID motherboard...

I totally agree with ~zonker~..I have used a few Abit boards with the Highpoint as well as the Promise card, and the performance difference is not noticeable..:)

I checked the link that ~zonker~ put up and it shows that in some cases the promise single disk is faster (by a lot) than the promise array. How does that work?

"The advantage of promise over Highpoint is the promise has a lower cpu usage"

Ok..so how much is the CPU utilization with the Promise? I don't think that is as much of an issue these days with a fairly decent CPU...

I personally would chose Promise, mostly because of my problems i had with the HighPoint 366 IDE controller chip. However many have posted that the newer Highpoint chips(370) perform quite well with none of the compatabally issues that occured with the older Highpoint chips. The speed difference between the chips, in my openion is shouldn't be too much of a factor. I'd just chose a MOBO you like.

Abit is the one company i know of that is using Highpoint. Asus and MSI use promise. Iwill uses American Megatrends(I think).

Definitely Promise, anytime when you have a choice between Promise and HighPoint, its a no brainer, AMI(American Megatrends) also make better controllers than HighPoint does.

Also, I wouldnt trust any comparisons on HighPoint's or Promise's web site because those numbers are obviously biased.

I'f I'm not mistaken, the Promise card only does RAID 0, while the Highpoint controller does RAID 0, RAID 1, and RAID 0+1.

That's something to take into consideration.

You're mistaken, the Promise does RAID 0 and 1, just not 0+1.

IMO RAID 0 is good enough, 0+1 is not that useful, plus its all software so it doesnt make much of a difference, I'd only get the RAID controller for extra IDE ports.

Check your own AT reivew of the MSI, it says RAID 0 and RAID 1.

I have to agree with KpocAlypse...

I used an ABit BE6...and that HighPoint 366 (ATA66) controller was HORRID!!!!
I had to disable it to get the board to work....

I would have chosen promise based on that....I also have an Ultra100PCI myself and I love it.

But, I have to agree with KpocAlypse...I've seen hordes of people very happy with the HP 370 (ATA100RAID) and I really haven't seen a good argument against it except highpoint's history....

I don't think I'd decide on a board based on promsie vs highpoint.

Cool, so as a recap can you tell me what boards use Promise?

Abit/EPOX = Highpoint?
ASUS/MSI/ = Promise?

IWILL = AMT?

Is that right? Did i miss any other boards?

Abit, Epox, Iwill and Soyo use HighPoint

Iwill and Asus also use AMI.

On my P3-842 the CPU utilization is about 7-8% under HD Tach. With the same setup with HPT368 it is about 17-20%.

KpocAlypse was right.... just choose a better mobo u like. if you have a non raid mobo then in this case maybe you wanna go for promise card.highpoint point 370 have a good improvement over 366 hpt. Why because of that and give up abit kt7a raid board ?that is such a good mobo.
