What's the better CPU for video encoding?

green2

Senior member
I do a lot of video encoding and will possibly do some dvd authoring soon... I was just wondering what would be the better CPU to do that or is the most optimized for most programs, the Athlon XP or the P4 or the celerons? Any advice will be appreciated. Thanks.

I thought P4's were faster at vid encoding...

P4 is the fastest CPU for video encoding. Check out some P4 reviews. They are always on top by a pretty big margin.

i'd say the P4 for it's SSE2.......however if you do have the cash, then get the Opteron😉😀
it also has SSE2

Right, the P4 is the superior processor for most multimedia purposes. Where the Athlon XP tends to excel (pun intended 😉) is in business apps.

Look at every review done recently...NO amd chip even pr rated near p4 clockspeed beat the p4 in divx, mpeg2, and even mpeg3 encoding.....

HT p4 chips and 800fsb w/ Dual channel DDR400 only expand the lead....

Wow! Seems to be a lot of P4 fans here 😉

Any suggestions where I can get a P4 while not breaking my wallet? Thx!

actually, i'm more of an AMD fan than an Intel one.....but i do admit that Intel has the upper hand in video encoding

Therein lies the dilemma. 🙂 I was all set to upgrade to a P4, as I use my cpu for video encoding most of the time. However I couldn't justify the price premium. I'm happy with my amd rig though!

Just get a nice chip and OC the daylights out of it.
If it's stable you won't have any prob's with the video encoding process.
At least I haven't running dvd2one, instant copy etc, with a 1.6a@2.43
🙂

I have a 1.6a that runs happily at 2.4Ghz. I use the same apps as Oakenfold, in addition to IFOEdit, Scenarist and DVDMaestro.

Pentium 4 > AthlonXP at media encoding. Benchmarks all over the place prove that.
Not an Intel or AMD fan, I build the system I feel like building, and currently, I have an AthlonXP setup, whereas 4 months ago, I had a Pentium 4 setup.

It's not a matter of being an AMD or Intel fan. If someone tells you Athlon XP's are better for video editing, they either don't know and are feeding you a line of crap, or they're so into whole "my dad can beat up your dad" thing that they refuse to believe a P4 is good for anything.

I use Athlon XP's in my computer(s) because they're better for what I do. I don't do video encoding. If you want to do video encoding, get a P4 cause that's where they accel.

Agreed

IMO, cheap way to get a p4 is to wait for a Dell sale.

I got a Dimension 4550 w/ a 2.53 (SL6S2) even for $350.
The CPU alone costs about half that.

Therein lies the problem. You let a few more bucks on a CPU think your paying a premium.
A little known truth is Intel CPU's cost more, but motherboards less.
AMD CPU's cost less but motherboards cost more.

The price equals out in the end. Unless of course you go with no-name-brand componants all the way. But after looking @ your tbred system, going the Intel route would have been basically the same.

Very true....When I need a work PC for running CADD I use AMD processors cause their FPU is so strong and my testing showed that Autocadd didn't use all that extra bandwidth anyways....

I run Gknot w/ 5.03pro Divx codec, DVDshrink, Ifoedit, Rempeg, MyDVDpro, Ulead, Pinanncle, Winencoder, Winproducer...Oh yes I have tons of programs....

Really, I don't much care for Intel/P4s. I am very much an AMD fan. However, I do realize that the P4 trounces all over the Athlon XP for what you want to do. Perhaps I am a big fan of AMD because they do what I need to do better than the P4 for a lower cost (in my experience, I admit too, to not having compared all that recently either. I am staying with AMD anyhow for the time being. Until/If I need a P4). I do no video encoding and only light/occassional MP3 ripping/encoding.

Ah! Looks like my comment "P4 fans" solicited lots of response... 😉

I do appreciate the input and I'd like to let everyone know that due to price considerations and a spare working motherboard... I've decided to go along with the Athlon TBreds.... Although I realize that P4s will do excel at exactly what I want to do... I just can't shell out the money right now... However thanks for all your input...

I actually posted a similar question in the Tech support forums... At first I was surprised by the response as most people responded there as the vote was Athlon XP.. But I forgot I phrased my question there differently.... I was comparing the Athlon XP and the Celly w/ P4 archi....

To be honest, any Athlon XP or any P4 will give you decent performance. The P4 gives a little better performance... but if you're gonna spend couple hours creating a DivX video, what's 10 more minutes?
