What's the better chip...Q6700 or X6800?

A friend of mine thought he had bought a quad core chip.
He's had it for several months now & when he brought it over for me to work on, I did some benchmarks & found out he had a X6800 in it. Needless to say, he wasn't too happy when he found out he had a dual core.
I think he's still wanting a quad-core & i'm sure that it's too late for him to get any type of action on his purchase (even though the receipt shows a quad-core).
I have a BNIB Q6700 that I could offer him, but i'd like to know which is the better chip & why.
Thanks.

I don't know whether to laugh or cry reading this . Sorry that your friend got stiffed, I hope he didn't pay too much for it. I would try to sell that X6800 and get him a non-Extreme Edition quad. I'm not saying the X6800 is bad by any mean, but at this point, it's overpriced because 1) it's a dually, 2) it's a 65nm chip, 3) it's slightly slower at stock than a $180 E8400. It should be worth something to someone who appreciates the unlocked multiplier though.

If he hasn't noticed for several months then it is unlikely that he is doing anything that taxes even a dual-core system let alone a quad-core.

He won't likely notice the difference if you put a 10GHz octo-core in his system. This is a case of wanting epeen and feeling like his current offerings aren't up to the lady's standards.

You'd do him a favor by convincing him to "save up for a Nehalem this fall", he doesn't need a new CPU he needs to find himself a reason to have a new CPU before wasting any more cash.

Absolutely its too late, he's got zero proof that he didn't do the switcharoo himself after selling the original quad on Ebay. No reseller in their right mind would leave themselves open for fraud so easily...even if it were an honest mistake on part of the reseller there is simply no proof of this but there are lots of ways the reseller could envision this being a case of consumer perpetuated fraud.

Well if overclocking is part of the equation and your friend has a decent HSF then overclocking the bejesus out of the multi-unlocked X6800 would be the best thing for him (since he doesn't seem to be doing anything with his system to know he doesn't have a quad). Whatever single-threaded apps he is using will get faster with a X6800 overclocked to the mid-to-high 3.X GHz.

For anyone who does anything that taxes a quadcore then the Q6700 is in their best interest. But each consumer has a different need from their system. If your friend has an epeen void that needs some filling, then by all means ram a quad up in there.
