I have helped my friend put up a new i7-based computer couple of weeks ago. He paired that up with his 47'' TV to play games, watch games and play music. The sad thing is, he still lacks a set of discrete speakers, forced to live with whatever that his TV has inside.

He kept asking me if he should get one of those all-in-one "deals" that include a 5.1 receiver and speakers. Admittedly, I am more of a headphone person and not very well informed in the speaker side of things. Even with my limited knowledge, I get a feeling those certainly not the best, at least for music.

Usual recommendations for a cheap but good sounding systems seem to include used bookshelf sets from Paradigm, PSB and the likes. But that's just for 2-channel audio right? While such setup would be perfectly fine for music for the most part, his priority at the moment is HD movie playback, thus requiring a complete 2.1 setup.

From what I've seen, this guy is kinda crafty and wouldn't mind going the DIY route, provided that gives significantly better bang for buck. Oh, and he seems to like smooth and laid back sound if anything.

I am open to any suggestions, keep them coming! :)

EDIT: silly me, I swear I didn't see that stickied thread at the very top. Please pardon my inexperience with this forum. I will try to get back to this thread and update whatever missing details you need to get the best response. That is, in case I don't find everything I need in that long, resourceful thread.

Uh, definitely NOT how I'd do it. More like this (code HT10 for 10% off) and a budget AVR.

DIY opens up more options, but most of the interesting builds target a higher price point. Maybe five of these plus a sub? (PE also has some part sets.)
