I need the best wireless router that will give me the strongetst 802.11B and G stregth because the current one I use, a linksys is absolute crap and constantly work work for anywhere between 1 minute to an hour. The router needs to be able to get through like one wall without losing to much signel because my current one is one room away and I get Low to Very Low signel stregth. Thanks in advance for the help.

you can buy wireless boosters i do believe . it can boost your signal a bit . im not sure how well they work and dont know if you have tried one already.

If you have the linksys WRT54G you can get 3rd party firmware that will let you boost the signal strength and setup other various modes.

get the extreme air plus routers that offer 108 mbps

and then go for wireless network devices that have extreme roaming features

it may feel a little over expectations, but you won't be dissapointed

my bro has a wireless g connection, but it's crappy, 'cuz when someone opens and closes the door 'n stuff he gets disconnected

if you go to officemax and look at their networking products, you'll have a good idea of what I mean

oh yeah, try adjusting software too

lol....are you serious? thats a first i have heard. metal doors or something? does he get disconnected from the router, or internet?

I have a WRT54GS and have no problems in any other room. I live in an apt and can get a signal on my PDA (a Dell Axim X30) out in the parking lot. Flash to the latest firmware and see how it works? What version of firmare are you running now? How do you have it configured? What security settings? What channel? lots of things can go wrong with wireless, but it's sweet when it's working perfectly 🙂

[EDIT] Also, have one antenna pointing up and one antenna pointing at a 90 degree angle from the other. That seems to help me get excellent/very good signal coverage throughout, and jam my neighbors so XP SP2 doesn't try to latch onto them 😉

I have a D-Link Air *Plus* rated at 22mbps. Its stable and works fine for me.

A lot of times, your performance depends on the wireless adapter you are using to connect to with it. My dad's in-built wireless (centrino processor in a dell laptop) works better than my brother's external pcmcia card in a toshiba. Also, they both work better than a wireless pci card in a desktop. Every time i have used "better", i meant signal strength. And it only differs by 1 bar. My dad's laptop is mostly at full strength anywhere in the house (4 bars), while my brother's flickers between 3-4 bars. The desktop across in the other room than the router is usually at 3 bars. sometimes drops to 2 bars.
I have not seen any change in internet activity though, as long as u are at 3 bars, internet is as fast as it can be.
So IMO, try a D-Link or NetGear. Best Buy, office max, etc usually have good deals on them on sundays...and since you always have a 30day no hassle return guarantee...i would try them all one by one, and stick with the one that works best with your adapters. And seriously, if you dont do a lot of INTRAnet sharing, you should try both the 802.11b and 802.11g routers, of course its up to you if you want to get 802.11g wireless adapters or not.

Then again, my roommate had the same router, and it was bad..like the wireless wouldnt work properly at all. So it might be that the one u have has a faulty firmware or just a lil defective.

In short, try the d-link or netgear.

Yuppers, thats what I did. Solid signal all the time. I get a signal from outside on my ASUS a716 and its 20 stories down with solid concrete walls.

I've had that happen. Seen it happen with other people too. Weird issue. I get disconnected from everything. Signal just drops. Open the door back up and the signal comes back pretty weak.

The WRT54G allows you to increase output power with the Sveasoft firmwares (among a few others). Default power is 24mw and the consensus is that it's safe to raise the power to 3x the setting, to 72mw. Anything beyond is regarded to be cautious since some (not all) have cooked their units over time with ridiculously high settings such as 150mw. You can also boost the strength by using a different type of antenna. In all, you can make your WRT54g put out a signal strong for miles. So that solves the problem? No, because transmission is a two-way thing. Your laptop/receiver card uses a tiny little antenna and very little output power so merely having the router put out an intense signal doesn't accomplishes a whole lot if the receiving end can't send a strong enough signal back.

I have that router, and it's very useful.
BTW, do you have a link for that firmware upgrade?
