what's the best way to turn a notebook into a gps unit?

Just a note that you might not be able to use MS's Streets and Trips with a usb puck, the program seems to still only accept serial port input.

If you also want a real gps unit to use off of the laptop, the geko 201 and a serial cable looks pretty good.

 
I got the Delorme Earthmate GPS (small device with a USB connection) and it worked fine with my laptop. The Earthmate GPS comes with Delorme's Street Atlas software but I found the user interface to be incomprehensible. So I installed Microsoft Streets & Trips (2003) and the GPS worked fine with that one too. Used it on 3,000 miles of driving (CO, WY, UT, NM) this summer.

S&T doesn't have the voice prompts, but I didn't care.
