What's the best way to travel between cities in EUROPE?!?

I'll make it VERY QUICK

1. Going to europe for the first time this summer.
2. Airfare too expensive, probably go early off-season 9/1-15th. (can't go for too long becasue of my job)
3. Checking major European attractions: Paris, London, Rome, & Amsterdam.

Now the questions:
1. What's the best way to find tickets for cheap? Just priceline it?
2. What do you recommend for two weeks? I think it's too short to do hostel-hopping backpacking... Just lodge in hotels in each big cities?
3. how far are each four cities apart from each other? What's the best method of travel between those four?
4. In which order should I visit those cities? Arrive at which and depart at where?
5. Anything else?

Thanks

Best bet: fly into London, Chunnel to Paris, train to Amsterdam, train to Rome, fly out of Rome to home, possibly with stop in hethrow. I personally would stick to just London and Paris, you'll spend to much of your vacation in-transit otherwise, and those two cities have PLENTY to do. I'd find a decent hotel, far from the center, but with good tube access in London, not sure what I would do in Paris.

1. For tickets, just check orbitz, travelocity, priceline, etc. But check specific airline websites because they tend to have even better deals.
2. If you can afford to weeks of hotels, why not.
3.I'd recommend air travel for those cities. Check skyscanner.com(I believe thats the one) for tickets

Between London and Paris I'd take the train, although it is very expensive.

The train in France is very cheap, like $40 to go anywhere. I really liked the trains there.

If you book early enough you can get some decent discounts on the train.

You get the SHAFT if you book soon to when you want to travel.
