What's the best way to train a puppy?

I was reading on the thread about the doberman and rottweilder and I'm wondering if I get a puppy, what's the best way to train it besides taking it to a place to get trained? I always wanted a Husky and does anybody have any experience with a Husky?

Depends on what you want him to do... I trained my pup to do a ton of tricks, but we are talking different dogs... after all, mine is a cocker spaniel (best dog i have ever had)

Petsmart offers relatively inexpensive training classes that are very good. You take your dog, but most of the education is actually for you. They teach you how to train your dog to do whatever you want. The classes are usually 1 night a week for 6-8 weeks. And they are extremely fun.

Q: What's the best way to train a puppy?

A: Be able to spend at an hour or two a night with him for the next 5 years.

Absolutely. I got a 2 month old Border Collie when I graduated college. I didn't have a job lined up, so I was home with the dog for 6 months. It helped tremendously to be able to spend time with it. Best dog I've ever had. If you spend a lot of time away from home, do not get an active dog. It will be miserable, and in return, you will have p00p in your shoes.

Don't get a puppy - go to the pound and get a 1 year old that someone gave up on and train him.

Lots of Positive Reinforcement. And enroll in a local puppy training class. Lots of dog training places have special classes for puppies... But they depend on your area. I'd ask at your vet if they can recommend somewhere that does puppy training.

That's actually a great idea if you have a RESCUE near you. We got our GOlden Retriever from a rescue and she was 1 year old. She was already fully house trained and new all the basic commands. We still went to normal dog training partially to get her more trained and partially to train US in how to train her going forward...

Having done that, I dont' think I'd ever get a puppy again unless it was some fancy breed that you couldn't find ain any rescue or shelter type place.

Agreed. Pup or aged, either way, save a kennel dog.
