if i wanted to teach myself how to play an acoustic guitar, what's the best way to go about it? what books would you guys recommend? something that really works, instead of those 'teach yourself guitar in 10 lessons' books that shows me how to play 'ode to joy' and nothing else.

I know that my brother in part self-taught, but I'm not sure which books he used. He went to the local music store and got a book. He's not just a mediocre guitar player either, he can play anything from country (puke) to classic rock to new stuff too. You can probably find stuff online about how to play the tabs and stuff... I'm not exactly sure where to look though

thats kinda what i want to avoid though, i could look up tabs and chords on the internet, and i might learn how to play one or two of my favorite songs, but i still wont know proper fingering for scales or how to read notes.

I see, well teaching yourself really isn't the best way to do that. People who teach themselves usually pick up their own playing habits among other things. I would recommend taking lessons, I'm sure you can find them cheap somewhere.

How much music background do you have? Is guitar your first instrument, or are you proficent in others? If you are fairly proficent, just learn to read TAB and start picking up some songs. If you have no music background, then you really should consider cheap lessons, at least to get you started. Most instruments are only self teachable once you hit a certain level.
