I am installing a mounting system for a mobile computer into a car. Part of the installation requires that I provide power for the computer. It has been suggested that I leave the accessory outlet out of the equation and hard wire directly to the fuse block in the passenger compartment.

What is the best way to cleanly tap into the fuse block?

Vehicles are 07 Toyota Prius, 01 Ford Escape, and 01-05 Ford Taurus.

radio shack used to sell fuse block "taps"

you pull fuse out, put tap in, and then put fuse back in

the tap gives you a little metal tab to solder a wire to for power

If you've got an empty socket, which most cars do, just make sure the power is connected, and wire your devic to the other side, I've done this for adding several things like radios and amps like this, just wire directly into an open fuse.

With something like a mobile computer, you might want to run a wire (Probably 12-14 gauge) right to the battery's positive terminal. Put an in-line fuse in it and you are good to go. This way you can run the computer without the key being on, and the power will be cleaner (No ECM hash or alternator interference)......
