What's the best way to store DVDs?

I plan to take on a project to convert my wife's VHS collection to DVD using my PC. The first question that comes to mind is how to store the DVD's? Should I get those thin jewel boxes and use those? I'd rather save space by buying a sleeved binder to store them in to save space. Will this somehow accelerate the degradation of the DVDs if I store them in sleeves?

Does anyone have any storage suggestions other than those two?

Buy a nice cd binder instead of using a bunch of cheap jewel cases. In a binder the collection will be much more accessible compared to picking up a stack of jewel cases and sifting through them. Out of all the cd binders I've used Case Logic is the best. The sleeves don't scratch the discs, and they keep them where they're supposed to be. Besides, those slim jewel cases don't last very long if they're used often.

🙂

The main thing is to store them in something that protects the surface, and provides a cool dry environment. Never leave them in the car - especially CDRs. I keep hundreds of them in CD drawers in plastic clamshells. Have had some for over 6 years, and have not had one go bad yet.

Agree 100% with the Case logic cd binders. I have about 8 of them at the moment that i use to store all my DVD backups, linux distos and itunes backups to CD, and they are great.

Based on your responses it Looks like a sleeved binder is the way to go. - Thanks!

Next up - TV card selection! I'll need to buy an internal TV tuner to get the VHS movies onto the hard drive!

Are you referring to a VCR/DVD recorder combo device? Keep in mind that the quality of the copy will only be as good as the source.

A movie that is purchased on a DVD is going to have better quality video and audio output than that same exact movie on VHS. The reason is that the movie exists on a DVD in digital format and will be crisper and clearer.

The VHS version of the movie exists on (arguably) obsolete magnetic tape and is read in analog format. Additionally, the VHS magnetic media are subject to degredation over time. A 20 year old video tape is going to have worse video/audio quality than a brand new one. This is due to the nature of the dated technology.

When your father copies his VHS tape onto DVD there will be NO increase in audio/video quality. The DVD copy will look exactly the same as the VHS tape. The biggest selling point to converting the media is to extend the life. DVDs should be able to last longer without degrading.
