What's the best way to remotely control/administer a PC that is at a different location (another state to be exact).

A family member is getting her first PC(WinXP Home)--she lives in another state--and will have a dial-up internet connection (just like me).

I would like to be able to help her out REMOTELY by gaining control of her PC and make the changes or whatever is necessary.

I would be willing to pay long distance charges to dial-up directly (if that is possible) to her modem if it has enough advantages (such as speed) but, I imagine, connecting to her via the internet is probably the easiest.

Does anyone have recommendations how to do this? I have heard of VNC, PC Anywhere, and GoToMyPC. I don't know much about them except I think they will do remote PC control/administration.

Any input will be appreciated.

Thanks.

XP has a built in remote control feature. You just have to get it set up correctly and then have her grant you permission to take control of the machine. It seems to work alright most of the time. I've helped my folks out using it numerous times and they are across the country.

You can do it through MSN MESSENGER

if the person has XP and has the latest version .. it allows you to connect to the computer remotely~

Don't you need XP Professional to connect to remote computers?

And, can you really control a PC via MSN Messenger?

TightVNC

Its free, its small, and easy to configure and use.

I use it to remote admin our 70+ machines and servers here at work.
