As the topic askes, what's the best way to password protect a webpage/entire folder (if possable) on a personal webpage? I've tried googling to see if there's any "How to...s" out there but all I come up with are programs (non-free ones at that) that do it for you. Is there a simple way to do this? Better yet, what's the simplist way to do it?

Thanks

Have to talk to the host and have them setup some simple security rights for the folder with a generic password.

Thanks for the replies I headed back to bed after righting that (the joys of college). Anywho, my hosting is done by addaction.net. I've been pretty happy with them, and getting the first 6 months free is a plus. I'm new to website building and all of that, that's why I'm starting with a personal page (feel free to check it out. Nothing special by any means just trying to get a feel for DreamWeaver MX and Photoshop.

Btw, I think you meant what application you use to access the admin controls. In that case it's called "CPanel"

use a .htaccess file.

CPanel comes with a built-in "security" plugin... try looking on your menu unless your host has disabled it.

cpals is correct since addaction.net offers cPanel (they just upgraded it yesterday actually, I know because I had some problems :) ).

Here's a screen shot of cPanel bluetrix skin with auto install scripts, under Site Management click Directory Protection.

You should also learn how to do this manually as well by using .htaccess
