"What's the best way to learn the play the guitar? "

practice, practice, practice.

but seriously, get an instructor. you can learn on your own, but it's gonna be harder. if you do decide to go it alone, look into a series of books called "Fretboard Logic" that's a great start.

My brother in law just taught himself to play guitar. I am still learning myself, but the recommendation is to start out simple. Learn the chords and how to easily transition from one to another. Work on scales also. You need to build calluses, finger strength, and dexterity.

Don't get too frustrated, it gets better I am told. Keep practicing. Every day.

Great songs to start learning are most by Nirvana.

<-- taught myself

Get some tablature/chords. Learn all the chords. Keep it simple. You'll learn as you go. Be patient. Making bridges for the first time sucks, hurts, is difficult, etc.

What makes a folk guitar different? What do you mean by folk guitar? There are acoustic guitars (steel string), classic guitars (nylon string), electric guitars ... I'm not sure what you mean by folk guitar. Most country/folk style will use acoustic. Nylon strings are easier on the fingers. I've got 2 classic guitars, one electric and one acoustic. The nylon is the easiest (on the fingers) to play, and easiest to tune. The electric is by far the hardest to tune.

Folk/classical guitars have wider necks (bad if you have small hands), nylon strings (easier on the fingers), and have a smaller body. They're usually made out of different woods. The headstock is also open and there's no pickguard but that's mainly a cosmetic thing. Classical guitars are mainly for fingerpicking.

There are a lot of good resources at harmonycentral.com for learning guitar.
