whats the best way to install compiz on ubuntu

just setup a vmware workstation on windows and was wondering what would be the best way to install compiz on ubuntu.

are there distributions available with compiz built in?

any help or directions would be great

what version of Ubuntu are you using? Feisty? It should already be installed, all you have to do is enable it (I don't remember now how, but I believe there is a link exactly for that question in the Linux FAQ sticky).

still havent downloaded any distro yet. so was thinking would be best to get one with compiz built in. also how do i update compiz to the latest version?

sudo apt-get install compiz

maybe?
or use synaptic
if it's not there you might have to add the repository first

Feisty and later are more user friendly than windows, a lot of the available apps in the repositories are like unstable pre-alpha releases for windows IMHO.

There's experimental 3D acceleration support in Workstation 6 but I have no idea if it'll be good enough for compiz.

I wouldn't get my hopes up, the 3D acceleration support is experimental at best so far.

I just went through this in Ubuntu Feisty Fawn. There's a couple of things you can do.

Out of the box, compiz is integrated into Ubuntu. All you need to do is go System -> Preferences -> Enable Desktop Effects. I believe at that point you can get your fingers into the configurations parameters by hitting ALT+F2 and running "ccsm."

Myself, I installed compiz fusion, which is basically Compiz plus a lot of the nice features of Beryl. To do that, I basically just followed this How-to:
