I have a nexus 4, and I want a way to get a loud audible notification in certain events. I was thinking it could be driven by email, but would it be hard on the battery to have it constantly poll a pop account? I'd also want to use pop3s so I'm not constantly broadcasting a clear text password. Or is there a better way? The two main things I want to monitor is my environmental monitoring software, email would be the easiest as I just need to add that email address to the alarm points I want to monitor. And I also want to monitor a custom calendar app I will be writing, so again email would be the easiest as I can have it send an email.
Part of the issue with the nexus 4 is the retarded speaker placement, so when it's on the table it's not really loud to begin with and everything I've seen such as text messages or even google calendar notifications will just make very low "ding" type sound that I wont even hear if the phone is not in my hand. I want to make it so it continues to sound until I acknowledge it. Or at least, do it for spurts, so like every 10 minutes.
Is there a way to do this already? If not, I'm thinking of perhaps writing an android client for my monitoring software, and for the calendar I can just have a general alarm for "calendar notification" then I just need to check for what it is. But I'm just curious to see if there's already something out there that would do this before I code anything. Never coded a phone app before so I have no idea what's involved or how hard it is. Something I've been wanting to learn though.
