What's the best way to connect two computers to scan for malware?

Hey, All,

I'm not very sophisticated when it comes to networking related things, so I apologize in advance for what will probably seem like a stupid question.

I do malware removal for friends & acquaintances on a semi-regular basis. Sometimes I encounter a badly infected PC that has disabled the native security app and blocks access to online scanners.

What I'd like to be able to do is scan the infected hard drive with my laptop's security app(s). Obviously, I can physically remove the infected HD from its host PC and scan it by hooking it up to my laptop via a USB adapter cable, but that takes a little time and isn't always convenient.

What I'd like to be able to do is connect the infected PC to my laptop -- without removing the infected HD from its host PC -- so I can scan it (i.e, select the infected drive as the target for the scan).

What's the best way to do this -- with an ethernet crossover cable, or is there a better way? Most of the time this will take place in my client's home, so I won't have a wireless network of my own to use to make the connection.

Lastly, is there any ironclad way to keep my 'scanning' laptop from being infected by, say, a worm in the infected PC? What's to keep it from 'jumping' across to my laptop and infecting it too? (We all know that relying solely on my laptop's native security apps to proactively block everything won't be ironclad.)

Would really appreciate any tips/suggestions.

I wouldn't. Why put an infected machine on a network? There is absolutely no way to protect your machine absolutely.

I see you have posted in the Security Forum here also. Read the sticky. Schadenfroh and MechBgon have excellent guides and suggestions there.
