Whats the best way to burn files onto a DVD+R?

I got the rebadged Liteon 851 with updated firmware, so it should burn 4X media at 8X. Also have 100pk of RICOHJPN, under nero it says i can burn them at 8X even though DVD Identifyer showed them as 2.4X-4X.

Now to my main problem, how should i burn files onto the DVD+R. I have read for movies some people burn them into image files, and then use a image drive tool to read them later on when they want to watch it.

Majority of my movies are Divx and range from 700-1200MB each. Should i just burn it directly as a data DVD+R? Will my Apex DVD player for my TV read it? or will other DVD-Rom drives in other computers be able to read it? Or should i just burn them into DVD-ROM (New Firmware supports Bitsetting) (Where do i change the setting so it burns DVD-ROM's?)

Then same goes with games, backup programs and files. Should they just be burned as a Data DVD+R, or burned as a DVD-ROM if possible?

Basically i want to be able to backup my movies, and files onto DVD's and be able to play them either on a stand alone DVD player for TV, or play in other computers with just regular DVD-ROM drives.

Some newer DVD players can play divx's, but you would probably know if you had one because divx playback would be the big selling point for those particular models.

Well my Apex stand alone DVD player for my TV can play avi files i think.

Because i just burn CD-R as data with a full divx movie and it plays.

But i guess ill have to make sure first. before i start wasting all my DVD+R

AVI files are just generic containers, the important part is the codecs used.

Oh i c. hmmm guess i might as well just convert them all to MPEG files then. since i know for sure my stand alone DVD player can play those.

Now should i burn them as DVD-ROM or leave them as DVD+R?

Unless you have a real DVD press you can't burn real DVD-ROM discs. If you want to know if you should use -R or +R media, it depends on the player, the differences otherwise are minor.

offtopic:

Is there a guide out there on the net? Google doesn't yield the results I'm looking for... need your recommendation for a good reliable source to guide me through the process... maybe even provide the softwares needed.
