What's the best video card for this system

I currently have a 1.4Ghz Celeron (upgraded from a p3 450), 384 mb pc100 (i know, i know), and a pitiful 16mb video card. I'm going to build a new system next yr w/ tax return $, but need to do something about the video card right now. My options are:

1. Buy a 9700 np now and put it in the new system next year
2. Buy cheap card now and buy a new one in a year

My question is, what's the best card that I can get now that won't be overkill for my system? I know the 100 mhz FSB is going to put a stranglehold on my system, but if the best card I can get for now is cheap, I will probably opt for option # 2.

Yeah, I'd get a 8500 or Ti4200 or something of the kind to hold out for some time.

Newegg has a Radeon 9100 (basically a 8500 with a newer bios) $65; includes a free hat.

I got one today; can't wait 🙂

RIP GF2 GTS 🙁

If you like AA and AF, get a 9500 PRO. Although the slow memory and processor would limit your maximum framerate, you should still get decent framerates with the 9500, and it would probably last you quite a whil, even on your new system. Buying a slow card now just to tide you over seems like a waste of money to me. Of course, I buy a new video card every year anyway, so that wouldn't be a problem, but we weren't talking about me, were we?

Thanks for the replies. You don't think a 4200 would be too much for my system? If not, then that's probably the one I
l'll go for--what's the cheapest one anyone's found. Going as far south of $100 is what I'm looking for. Thanks again!

Maybe the FX5200? That's just as cheap, maybe even cheaper than Ti4200's... and your processor will still be the bottleneck there... but you'll be able to run AA and AF without much of a performance hit.

well yes, the thing is wether to go 4200, radeon 8500 (or equivalent I'm way behind in their numbering systems)

or go reeeally budget and maybe get an even second hand geforce 4 MX440 or something like that, shouldnt cost more than $40 and will be right on par with what yer system can perform in feeding the card (exept for FSAA and the likes, but hey you cant want everything eh, make sure NOT to get an MX 420 or any radeon lower than 8500 (eh dunneuh bout the performance of the radeon 9000, but wouldnt get that one either, unless someone can say it is a decent prformer)
