iPad 2. But highly recommended that you stretch that extra $100 to get iPad 3 if this is your first tablet.

This. The screen on the new iPad is amazing, but really iPad 2 can do everything the new one can. It has by far the best selection of apps and games. It has the best build quality I have seen on a tablet (granted I haven't tried the Prime in person yet, but iPad 2 sure blows away anything else I've seen.) Battery life is among the best. The year-old GPU in it is still more powerful than Tegra 3's, great for 3D gaming.

As far as OS, I actually prefer the dead simple, fast, responsive iOS over Ice Cream Sandwich (on my Galaxy Nexus). It has noticeably less input lag and smoother scrolling, which IMO make it far more pleasurable to use.

I honestly wouldn't bother with anything else unless you really need an SD card slot.

Doesn't the Ipad 3 have a better GPU than the Ipad 2?

Yup, it uses the PowerVR SGX543MP4. iPad 2 uses the MP2 (dual core graphics vs quad core in the new model.) It's the same GPU as Playstation Vita, clocked 25% higher if I'm not mistaken.

But even the iPad 2's GPU is more powerful than Tegra 3's.

Yeah, the 543MP2 is no slouch. I wouldn't try to justify the iPad 3 over the 2 on the basis of the SoC alone. But, that screen, the 5MP camera, the extra 512MB of RAM and bluetooth 4.0 are solidly worth the extra $100.

i think if its not the ipad (because you dont want apple stuff in the same places you eat and sleep), the asus tf201 is the best choice. even though the tegra 3 on paper looks slower then apple's stuff, in real life it performs very similarly

For the money, an iPad? I'm not saying it's not the best tablet, but 'for the money' implies something else.

I am not an Apple fan by any means, but certainly if I we get a tablet anytime soon it will be an iPad. You can get cheaper tablets, but if there aren't many quality apps made for them and an inconsistent UI/UX it will just be irritating.

It all depends if you can deal with the apple world or not. I personally would love to have the "new" ipad, but the fact that i cant just drag and drop what I want when I want just kills it for me.

The refurbished iPad2 for $349 is the best deal right now.
While its GPU is no where as fast as the iPad3, its powering a screen that half the resolution so you are basically getting the same performance.
Just don't go looking at an iPad3, once you see the screen, you won't want to go back.

For the money, probably the iPad2. However, I think the extra money for the iPad3's screen alone is worth it.

This! Unless you have apps that are android only (very unlikely), there is nothing out there at this price range that can touch the Ipad 2 refurb.

All refurbs come with the same 1 year warranty, new battery, and 14 day return window!

I got the mines a few weeks ago for the kid and its amazing!
