In the Final Fantasy spirit, Melodies of Life sung by Emiko Siratori. As with many songs, you can find it on Napster.

Alone for a while I've been searching through the dark,
For traces of the love you left inside my lonely heart.
To weave by picking up the pieces that remain.
Melodies of Life-Love's lost refrain.

Our paths they did cross, though I cannot say just why,
We met, we laughed, we held on fast, and then we said goodbye,
And who'll hear the echoes of stories never told?
Let them ring out loud till they unfold.

Chorus: In my dearest memories, I see you reaching out to me.
Though you're gone, I still believe that you can call out my name.

A voice from the past, joining yours and mine.
Adding the layers of harmony.
And so it goes, on and on.
Melodies of life.
To the sky beyond the flying birds-forever and beyond.

So far and away, see the bird as it flies,
Gliding through the shadows of the clouds up in the sky,
I've laid my memories, do you remember loving me?
Leave them now and see what tommorow brings.

Chorus

If should I leave this lonely world behind.
Your voice will still remember our melody.
Now I know we'll carry on.
Melodies of Life.
Come circle round and grow deep in out hearts, as long as we
remember.

i'm going to go totally against the grain here, and name a song NOT in the rock-n-roll genre... Pachabel's Canon in D Major.

Tool - Pushit
especially the live version on Salival. That version still makes me cry almost every time I hear it.

Enya - Orinoco Flow
Enya - Only Time
Cocteau Twins - Mizake the Mizan
Cocteau Twins - Suckling the Mender
Cocteau Twins - Summerhead
Cocteau Twins - Carolyn's Fingers
Cocteau Twins - BlueBeard
Cocteau Twins - Mellonella
The Sundays - Wild Horses

theres tons more by various artists but I don't feel like typing them all out and these are just too good to pick only 1 out of them

i'd have to say the Smashing Pumpkins have done too many good songs for a BEST song, they all kick ass 🙂

Pink Floyd: One of my turns
Pink Floyd: Comfortably Numb
Candlebox: Far Behind
Rage Against the Machine: Renegades of Funk
Pink Floyd: Breathe
Anthrax/Public Enemy: Bring the Noise

Youareaweaklink:
Pink Floyd is my favorite (has been that way for 8 years) and I think you are forgetting Echoes off their album Meddle.

Their other great song is Time.

In terms of Candlebox... my 2nd favorite band of the 90s (only to Pearl Jam because they made teh best album of the 90s - Ten - you should be thinking of Rain...

Just my $0.02

Toast While we're talking about Ten, please agree with me that Release is the best song on that album? I think I'll get it now 🙂

Pat Benatar - Invincible (dorky I know, but I likey)

Okay these might be a little different then some of the other answers, but for some reason these songs really strike a chord with me. Wide taste of music I have huh 😉

My top 10, no particular order.

New Radicals - You only get what you give
Peter Gabriel - The Flood (piano only version)
White Zombie - More Human than Human
Sting - Desert Rose
Violent Femmes - Add It Up
Billy Joel - Piano Man

Queen - Who wants to live forever (it still gives me chills)
Metallica - Master of Puppets

Favorite album:
Peter Gabriel - Shaking the Tree (wow, talk about a masterpiece!)

Actually, the best music I have ever heard was written by Mozart. Almost anything of his is EXCELLENT...

Music with words; I'll jump on the bandwagon and post just some of my favorites.

Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody
Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit
Metallica - Nothing Else Matters
Guns -n- Roses - November Rain
Eminem - Way I am (for a white boy, he can put words together)
Michael Jackson (don't flame me; the guy had talent)
Thompson Twins - Hold Me Now
Nine Inch Nails - Down In It
Nine Inch Nails - Closer
Tom Petty - Last Dance with Mary Jane
Dr. Dre/Eminem - Forgot About Dre
Smashing Pumpkins - Tonight
R.E.M. - Losing My Religion
Billy Ocean - Caribbean Queen

Just about anything by Radiohead gets my goat everytime. But, if I had to choose just one, I'd say it was No Surprises by Radiohead. Great video too.

The problem is, people's tastes keep on changing. I may think that the Smiths are the greatest band one day and then Slayer is the best the next and then on to Front 242. I CAN'T DECIDE DAMNIT.

So, I'll pick a few more. 🙂

Street Spirit - Radiohead
Carolyn's Fingers - Cocteau Twins
Reek of Putrefaction - Carcass
Crapage - Front 242
Birdmad Girl - Cure
Come to Daddy - Aphex Twin
Let's Break The Law Tonight - Anti Nowhere League
Everyday is Halloween - Ministry
Homeboy - Adorable
Die When You Die - GG Allin
Enlightened Evolution - Astral Projection

I have a 60gig drive full of MP3s and a couple hundred cds back from the days when I used to DJ. That's why it's so hard to decide on just one particular song.
