Whats the best software for CD Game Images

I would like to know what software would be good for creating images of my games. I would like some kind of virtual CD to be able to play the games without the CD, and also be able to make back-up copies of all my CD's - games and progies if possible.

Also, will the software allow me to run the images from a different drive than the original install location? Currently I have 2x Raptors as Raid 0 partioned with one 10GB for OS, and one 60GB for all progies and games. I also have a WD 250GB SATA drive that I'm going to use for my data/archive, but I would really like to store and run my CD images on this drive as well.

Alcohol 120% will probably be mentioned a few times in this thread.

It should do everything that you need it to. I keep my CD images on a seperate fileserver/NAT computer and use Alcohol 120% to mount the CD images over a LAN! 😀

Thanks ObiDon - this sounds good. Just a few more questions.

Will I have to install Alcohol 120% on the drive I run the CD images on? Also, just out of curiousity what does NAT stand for?

It's not really drive-specific, if that's what you mean...it just installs like any other application. You don't even need to keep the images all on the same drive or partition if you don't feel like it. Also, you can have more than one CD image mounted at once so you don't have to always tinker with the settings if there's a few CDs that you normally swap.

I think there's a trial version you can download and mess around with. 😉

NAT stands for network address translation. It's kind of like using a computer instead of a router to share an internet connection.

Thanks again - I guess I was just confused, because I thought in order for me to be able to load the images (from wherever), that I would have to have the application installed as the same location as the images, but from what you've said, that's not necessary. Nat - I get it - I was considering setting up an old computer as a router, but I wasn't sure how to do it, so now the old computer is in storage.

I 3rd Alcohol 120% 😉 it's an excellent tool that does everything you asked for. There is also CloneCD which does what you are looking for, but personally I don't think it's as effective as Alcohol 120%.

The virtual drives work by assigning a new drive letter to any hard drive you have. So if you backed up a game as an image file and had E: as a virtual drive then you would just right click on E: and bind the game image file to that drive. So when ever you click E: it would just be like clicking on it as if there was a CD-ROM in there only much faster and the E: drive only takes up how ever much space on your hard drive that the image file is.

i use clone cd to rip to .img file then use daemon tools as the image mounting software. i also have never had an issue using a program such as winiso to rip the cd to .iso for mounting as well.

I also recommend Alcohol 120%. Its mounting part is actually based on Daemon Tools. But going the freebie route with DT and say, Disc Dump for making images is not 100% effective when it comes to copy protection.

This topic sure interests me ... I'll try alcohol_120%

Will Alcohol make good clones of my games CDs? I mean, bypassing those protections?

What about Daemon Tools: Which images can it mount? All of them?
