Whats the best socket A processor out now?

The XP Mobile chips are fine, if you can find one for a decent price. They overclock fairly well and the power consumption isn't too shabby.

Your other choice (as already mentioned) would be a Barton core. Good Luck!
 
You can get a Barton core Sempron but I just got a Barton 3000XP -333 so I could still OC it a little and get close to 400 FSB from it.
A3000XP-333 running 2.2G stable fsb 339.79, 1G HyperX (2-2-2-11), ATI R7200 - Linux FC3.
 
I like this 35w mobile 2200+ I have @2.5ghz in my kids' NF7-S V2.
 
Mobile xp chips are picked because they run higher at a lower voltage making them usually the best overclockers.

How much performance would I see over a stock XP1900+ (1900 won't overclock at all, locked multiplier and any fsb over 135 (stock 133) is unstable).
I'm not certain that with a chipset that old you can get enough fsb and overclock to make it worth an $85 investment. It is your call, but I would sell your board&chip and spend $130 for a skt754 2600+ and NVF3-250. You'll end up with a far faster system for $10-$30 more than the Bartron-M alone, just for the effort of selling and shipping the current combo off.
 
but i would wait if your getting a sempron on skt 754, amd has annouced that the chips will be 64-bit now, if you wait a few weeks, you'll get that feature for pratically nothing more

Thought the unlocked multiplier would help there, and the board is rated at a 333 FSB (hence XP-333) Some of the reviews I saw got it upto 400. Mostly I would be putting off a full system overhaul until Nvidia puts out mainstream GF 7 series cards. Right now my current computer runs like crap and I'm sure its CPU bound as my brother's recently upgraded computer is much faster than mine with a s939 3000+ Winchester and a 6600 stock.
 
If you are certain you can get DDR333 synch mode then the Barton-M is a good choice with up to a 15x multi to play with. You can probably manage 2.3-2.5ghz that way=big performance boost over a stock 1900+ 266fsb setup.

Well my BIOS gives me options upto 233 (DDR466) FSB, and I can run 133/166 Async now (133 fsb 166 ram), so I would think I'd be able to twink with it.
 
I would recommend against running a memory divider with an XP setup. Before I made the jump to my current A64 setup, I was running an Epox 8KDA3+ (one of the best NF2's Mobo's IMO) with an XP2100 @2.1Ghz (XP2600 speed). I could get the CPU to o/c a little higher by running the memory Asnyc from the FSB, but the performance hit was horrible. If I remember correctly, memory bandwidth limited apps peroformed anywhere from 17-25% slower, even tho the CPU was running almost 200mhz faster. Just something that I would keep in mind.
 
Well I can run the RAM at 166 with an async 133fsb/166 ram, but the question is does that mean I can run the FSB at 166?

Also the motherboard doesn't like if I over or underclock the PCI bus, it has dividers but I basicly have to run the FSB at 100/133/166/200/233 (doubt it goes upto 233, might make 200) so as to keep the PCI bus running at stock.

At 138 the sound crackles (I am guessing is the onboard PCI soundcard not liking the overclocked bus as I know the ram can handle it) FSB/4 = 34.5 If I try to run it at FSB/5 = 27.6 the system won't even post.

Maybe I should just wait and do my full system overhaul, I was hoping to see what sort of mainstream gf7/r520s showed up by my performance in my primary game (World of Warcraft) is fairly abysmal.
