Whats the best reviewed Laptop?

Not sure where to post this so ill try it here first, if its in the wrong forum move it if ya like 🙂

My hubby and I are looking for a good laptop with all the bells and whistles. Something he can do his work on and that i can play my BG 2 game on without troubles 🙂

Since we have never had a laptop before i have some Q's about them:

#1) Can we upgrade laptop memory ourselves seeing its cheaper locally, and therefor buy the system with only 128mb, or is this too hard and wont save any cost?

#2)How good are the built-in video cards on laptops now? We have a few Nvidia Geforce GTS cards in our desktops but how will this work on a laptop? Is there a similar card meant for laptops that will give us atleast 32mb video ram? Is this upgradable?

#3)Which company makes the "best" laptop nowadays or has good service etc? We are currently thinking about Dell, Gateway, Sony, Toshiba. Anyone know of a website that maybe does reviews/testing of the latest laptops for us to read up on?

We have a budget of approx $2500 but if we can get a good one for less, that will be great too.
I cant think of any more Q's but maybe ill add on to it later should i think of anything. Thx a lot for any advice in advance!

I would not look to a laptop as a gaming system. They don't come with the best of video or sound cards and are always behind the curve. Buy a laptop to do work and build a gaming PC.

1. most likely yes (easily plug in)
2. most likely no (can't upgrade)
3. try PC Magazine, but you don't have to agree with them.

edit: laptop is not for gaming because of the limitation in sound and video. If you can bear with those, then a laptop is an excellent choice especially when you go to your freind's house and play network games.

Yes you can upgrade the memory in most laptops.

No, I have not seen a lap top video card that is uprgadable but I suppose there could be one out there.

IMO, Sony Vaio makes the nicest laptops, of course your gonna pay for it.... big time but they are very nice and extremely fast.

I heard that people say Dell is pretty much close to gaming (Inspiron 8100). Not as good as desktop but the better one among other major brands. I am using IBM Laptop and I don't think the graphic card is for gaming. If you want to just use it for work then IBM is pretty reliable. The service is good also.

try to post this on the general hardware forum, you will see more replies from people.

Apple's iBook seemed to be the best buy out there when I got mine. I would recommend a titanium powerbook, but I think there should be an upgrade soon.

i have a thinkpad i'm really happy with. memory is upgradable in most machines and if you can get into a desktop machine and replace memory without frying it you should be fine doing the upgrade on most laptops.

there are dell and toshiba systems with the nvidia geforce2go chipset that should be pretty good for gaming, i believe one of them has 32mb video.

i personally won't buy anything but ibm, having serviced all brands for a few years now (about 6 total). if i was looking for a gaming laptop i'd probably go with the dell system (i think someone mentioned it, inspiron 8100?). their service isn't what it used to be, but they still seem to be a decent company. i've had a few issues recommending them lately because of some failed machines (a few clients bought dell machines and 3 out of 4 had to have the hdd replaced in a few months). the problem with dell and with ibm is that you can't really walk into a store and try them out.

i will say this. ibm's service is exceptional. i returned a laptop that had died (cause unknown, client wouldn't tell me the circumstances) on the friday before labor day and it was back in my hands the following wednesday, fixed OVER the holiday, working like new. i play diablo 2 on mine, altho the ati graphics card is NOT a gaming card at all.

hey, laptops arent prehistoric either, i can make my 850 duron HP laptop run at 70fps in CS in D3D mode...which is rather playable.

of course i gotta throw in an extra mouse tho.
