What's the best resolution?

Its all an opinion to most people.

I used to perfer 1024x768, then I moved up to 1280x1024, the max my old monitor supported. After I got my new monitor, I now run at 1600x1200.

I would say, the highest resolution with the minimum of 85hz refreshrate would be your best bet.
 
I have a 19" which I run at 1024x768. I used to run at 1280x1024, but my monitor is a cheapy (KDS VS-195e) and I get geometry problems past 1024. Plus, I like VSync and this monitor gets 100Hz at that resolution. 85Hz is definitely fine, but the geometry problem really pisses me off.
