What's the best replacement for a Celeron 366

My father has a celeron 366 running at 550. He would like to upgrade to something faster. He has an Abit motherboard although I am not sure which model. What do you guys think the best replacement would be considering that the only thing he wants to replace is the cpu. Also, do the FC-PGA cpu's fit in the same socket as the PPGA cpu's?
Thanks,

Yes they are compatible.

I have an ancient Abit BX6 that runs a Celeron 633@950 with no problems. I would look into the Celeron2's at 566->633 speeds.

Another Celeron would be compatible. What will not work is a PIII FC-PGA cpu. One of the 100 MHz Celerons might be a good choice in that board, since you're already running the components overclocked without problem. Good luck.

Yeah, I'd go with a 100Mhz Celron depending on what the Motherbord can do, just max out the motherbord multiplyer once it's overclocked. If you are at the end of the motherbords life span (doesn't run fast enough) you may consider a Duron, very much like the celrons, fast cheap and very overclockable.

You'd better identify the motherboard first. I had an Abit BM6 that would not support the PIII's, or cC0 stepping Celeron II's.
PPGA/FC-PGA are all socket 370 (except for the P-4).

Thanks for all the replies. I will definitely check what mobo he has for sure first. I think it's the BM6. Would that board support any of the PIII's? That seems to be the way he wants to go if he can.

NO it will not support the PIII. If you buy a powerleap adaptor, then yes it will. Go to powerleaps web site and read the customer feed back.

Get a Celeron Coppermine 128 566mhz (all 566's are Coppermines) and run it at 100fsb (850mhz). These are at the slower beginning speeds of this stepping and seem to OC as well as the 300 - 366's did.
They can be had for $55 shipped. Go to [pricewatch.com} and take a look.
If you have the BH6, it will support these CPU's with the later BIOS's.
You will also need a Slotket that suppots FC-PGA, not just PPGA.

You have to be careful with the 533's, as they come in both flavors. The 533 coppermines are also more expensive and harder to find and harder to find than the 566's.

Hope this helps.

FCPGA S370 processors fit in the same socket as PPGA S370 processor but that DOES NOT necessarily mean they are compatible. A board NEEDS to have specific support for the FCPGA processors in order to work with a FCPGA Celeron. Just because it supports PPGA Celeron's does not in any way guarantee that it will operate with FCPGA Celeron's.
The pin out on FCPGA and PPGA processors are identical but the actual usage specified for each individual pin differs between FCPGA and PPGA.

Ensure that your specific mobo supports FCPGA Processors, do not assume that just because they are both Scoket 370 that they will work because that is incorrect.
I don't believe you have stated your motherboard model, if you do so I will check into FCPGA compatibility.
