I'm making upgrades to my computer and I'm getting a ECS K7S5A mobo. It will be running a AMD XP 1900+ I was wondering what's a really good power supply brand and wattage for this setup.

Thanks,
Freedom

Antec TruPower Series..........the best and dead quiet. 330W runs for $50......it should power up anything u throw at it except for a dually setup.........then you'll need the 430W version which runs $75. u pick.

I would say PC Power & Cooling make the best power supplies out there, BUT they are expensive and don't have an internal fan to help pull heat off the CPU. If that is important to you I would say Enermax also has some very good power supplies. Otherwise, I vote for PCP&C.

EDIT: Forgot to mention... If you're going to bother with buying a new power supply, get at least a 400W model. That way if you add components in the future you won't be underpowered. Always better to have more than less with power supplies.

My 430W Antec Tru-Power that came with my 1080B case blew up when I plugged it in. How's that for quality control? Big thumbs down to Antec for that one. (although, the replacement didn't blow up, but I switched it out with my PCP&C anyway :D )

I have a "PC Power & Cooling" 400 watt power supply. I had read a lot of good things about it before I bought it. However, as mentioned before, they ARE expensive. Along with it being a high quality power supply, one of the other main reason I bought it is because it is QUIET! It has a very low noise level of 24 dBA. Hard to find that combination of quality and low noise together.

There is no "best". Just buy a quality unit (Sparkle, PCP&C, HEC, Antec, Enlight, etc) and you will do fine.

I'm not so sure I agree with you on that. There is a noticable difference in quality between some of the companies you listed above. Based on specifications you can determine which one is best. You can also look at the quality of the components used, warranty, etc. Guarantee you will find a best.

Think of it this way. My car stereo headunit is rated at "45 watts x 4". If I go buy a RockfordFosgate amplifier rated at 45 watts x 4, would you say I wasted my money since my stereo is already capable of this power output? Not exactly huh. It's the same with power supplies. You get what you pay for.

Anyways, I'm getting off topic, sorry.

You should do some research on your own, FreedomFighter, by going to each companies webpage and looking at the specifications to determine which power supply has the features you want at the price you can afford. Look for one with at least 400W of power output. Also, look at the amount of current (in amps (A)) that the power supply is capable of outputting at each voltage level, and how tightly the voltage is regulated. (the % of fluxuation in power above, or usually below, specifications due to changing voltage requirements... like spinning up a dvd, accessing files on your RAID array, or starting a game of Quake) This is where instabilities in your system due to the power supply normally come from.

Don't use what we say here to make your decision. Use what we say here to HELP you make a decision.

I'm not so sure I agree with you on that.

You're entitled to your opinion. Since I build and maintain PC's for a living, I use my work experience to back up my decisions and recommendations. All of the psu's mfg's I mentioned produce high quality units.

There is a noticable difference in quality between some of the companies you listed above.

All of the above mfg's I listed produce several variants, but please explain how Sparkle is better than Antec, or vice versa. PCP&C has a "20 reasons why you should buy..." guide sheet, but does that make them a better mfg than Enermax? You typically want to look at the combined +3.3 & +5v when purchasing a unit, and I recommend 190w or better on those rails for most systems.

Guarantee you will find a best.

I don't think so. In addition your Kraco head unit vs. a Fosbreak amp doesn't hold any relevance to this discussion. It's not like I recommended an "el cheapo" psu. ;)

Any good quality PSU will work fine,go for top brands like Antec,Sparkle,Enermax,Enhance ,PC Power Cooling etc, 400w will be handy for the future so will be a good size to get.

I like My 2 Enermax, have a "el cheapo" that does the job to0 on another pc.

If you are going to overclock, get a "Name Brand" if not just get cheapest 300-400w you can find

IMHO

I've been running an Antec Truepower 430 for about 3 months now w/no problems whatsoever. Antec, Enermax and many of the other listed in this thread are all considered high quality power supplies - i'm sure you can't go wrong with either choice. The Antec Truepower series are very quiet also if that's a concern.

dont think you really needa 400 watt power supply. not like your system will be using that much power. 70 or so watts for the cpu and the rest of the system prob another 100 - 120 watts. 300+ will more then suffice.

This gets my vote as well. The Antec TruPower series has the most stable and true voltages I've ever seen, and they're the quietest I've ever worked with as well.

The only bummer is, all the ones I've worked with are when I'm building machines for other people. I can't justify replacing my 6 month old previous version Antec PS that's working fine... But I'm awfully tempted.

Definitely get a quality psu. I would go with Enermax or Antec. I just bought a TruPower 430W for my new build and boy is it quiet! :D

lol I had the same rude experience of my ps blowing up too! neat fireworks in the form of blue lightening bolt type current going erratically in every directions for a good 3-6 inches....luck for me....the wall outlet was further way from that mess.....but I still had to lean over the flaming case to unplug the chord from the wall.....thought the house was going to go down in a fire....or better yet....I would be going down (shocked to death) with the house. lol

Just got the Enermax EG465P-VE(FCA) 431 watt Switching power supply.

Quiet, and appears to be a quality unit (we'll know in 10 years or so - ha).

;) Pretty much all very good advice, get a branded PSU no doubt about that, Antec, Enermax, TopOwer and Flower are the ones I rec, but other brands mentioned should all be very high quality.

:D When buying a PSU it is very much worth having the peace of mind that comes from knowing your PSU isn't under strain and isn't going to become a limitation in the near future. 300W+ should be okay, but check the price diff, 400W+ isn't much more and are undoubtedly worth it. I would also rec a dual fan PSU, no point skimping as it tends to bite yopu on the ass pretty quickly when you do!

Antec has good power supplies, but in my opinion, Enermax Rules!!!

They are heavy, sturdy, silent, and sooooooo reliable!... and not that expensive.

Has anyone had any experience using TTGI power supplies? I know that a lot of places sell em (tcwo, directron, etc.) but I havent heard much about their quality. They are priced aggressively of course, and they seem to be a good value.
