Whats the best portable MP3 player?

iPod. I have a 5 GB one, and it's great. I have an Apple only one, but I use it with Windows. I was too impatient to wait for the Windows one. 🙂

Okay, this is kind of annoying. You could have done a search on "mp3" because this topic has been discussed like crazy the past month or so. But I'll put my 2 cents in anyway.

It all depends on what type of MP3 Player you want. There are three types out there: Flash RAM based which will not skip, CD-MP3 which is CD player that can play MP3's burned onto CD-R, or hard drive based ones that are also called jukeboxes.

1. Jukeboxes. Large hard drives (5-40 gigs), some buffer to prevent skipping, nowadays comes with Firewire or USB 2.0 for transfers. The Apple iPod and Creative Nomad 3 are the two best in my opinion.

2. CD-MP3 players. This was popularized by the Rio Volt. Other models similar exist. I heard the iRiver version is better.

3. Flash MP3. These use all solid state parts. Nothing moves. Thus it can't skip. Great for working out. The one I own and my personal favorite is the MPIO DMG.

So there you go.

There isn't a windows one. 😕

ipod.. but if they had something a bit smaller, and that used CF (to cut costs.. as i don't need 5GB let alone 20GB of portable audio.. hell, the battery won't last long enough for that).

There will be next month iPod. See the "Now for PC's too" on the right side.

Rio Volt is still the best, IMO. Being able to burn CDs gives you unlimited storage capacity, and is very inexpensive compared to a hard drive based solution.

I love my RCA Lyra2.. came with 2 64mb CF cards... car kit, USB CF reader, nice headphones, FM tuner... all for $129... use it to work out and it works great.

Kind of funny with everyone saying this mp3 player or that one. And no one knows what the original poster is looking for in an mp3 player.

CD-MP3 players are nice in that you can use CD-R's. Makes it even better if you have a car mp3 player. But they skip like crazy, and you are limited to 700 megs put disk.

Hard drive players are good in that they have incredible storage. But they also skip (granted the iPod has 20 minutes of memory, but only good if you follow the playlist). They are larger. And they are expensive.

Flash players are nice in that they never skip and are the smallest ones out there. But they too are expensive, well the memory is. And they have the smallest amount of storage.

So until the original poster comes back with what type of mp3 player he wants, who the heck knows which is best.
