I'm out of the loop.

What's the right chip and motherboard and chipset for me to get. I'm building powerful systems at work. We just want powerful and stable.

And, I know that PCIexpress x 16 slots are used mostly for video cards, but what are all these other PCI x 1 and PCI x 4 slots used for?

Thanks...

Intel Chipsets are the most stable... so basically any mobo by Intel will be rock solid. Any 6xx series processor since they apparently run cooler and support 64 bit instructions.

And as of right now, nothing with any value uses the x1 or x4 slots. There are some expensive RAID cards or ethernet cards but right now, they are pointless since the PCI bus is more than enough and the cost is much lower.

Intel.... Tell those boss's that all the cool people are using them new fangled AMD K6-2's in their powerful systems.

Ironically Intel boards are the only boards I've had problems with :p Well 1 out of 2 gave up the ghost. My ASUS P4P800 has been churning along very reliably for a while now.
