What's the best Motherboard for a Athlon 950mhz cpu?

I have a Gateway computer with a AMD Athlon 950 cpu. I tried to put 512mb stick of mushkin pc133 ram into it and the computer locked. (I have 2 128mb sticks or ram currently) I find out later that the Gateway mobo can only handle 384 ram and 128mb ram per slot. I want to find out whats a good mobo i can get to replace my Gateway mobo? Do all motherboards have a limit on how much ram you can use per slot? Also, I would like to go up as high as 1gig of ram. I'm running Win XP Pro. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Yes, all motherboards have a limit as far as how much RAM is recognized per slot. It all depends on the motherboard. Do you really need more than 384MB of RAM? You must be planning on doing some AutoCAD or some other intense stuff. But to answer your question a little better, some motherboards will support up ro 1.5GB of RAM if that's what you need. BTW, do me a favor and enable your Private Messaging, I've got a question for you.😉

BTW, is your Athlon 950 a T-bird in a socket, a T-bird in a slot, or a Athlon Classic K7-5 in a slot? If you have a socket T-bird, the list of compatible mobos is endless. For example, my T-bird from Gateway is 1000/100mhz and hence, I can unlock it, change it to a T-bird 1000/133, pop it in an 8KHA+ if I wanted. Gateway gave me the MSI K7T Turbo-L mobo in the comp.

If you have a slot T-bird, you will find it hard to find a suitable board (the best chipset they have for those is KX133 if I'm not mistaken).

I'd have to agree with Ionizer 86, if you have a slot A your choices as far as an upgrade motherboard will be pretty limited.🙁

Yeah, my cpu is a slot 🙁 What are my choices for a mobo? or should i just buy a new cpu and mobo? Any good deals on a combo?
I just enabled my private messaging.

I would sell your old mobo and cpu (if you don't need it) in the local paper, and see how much money you have to work with. I use the shuttle ak31 version 3.1 ($80 newegg), but you may want raid or more overclocking features. Read Tom's Hardware Guide test of 13 kt266a boards, and look at the official threads in this forum for the boards you are interested in.
