As mentioned above, 115k was the speed reported between the OS and the modem. It was NOT the receiving speed of the connection, whcih cannot exceed 53.3k. This was a commonly reported error.

Well, theres the itty bitty speed boost but I'd also like a modem that connects them faster and gets a more stable connection.

And my father is a truck driver who is never home enough to go on a spurr of the moment trip with his wife. Mainly I fix/upgrade thier Pc's and work on thier cars ( in other words I take them to mechanics and pay them to do it : ) . I don't let them pay me back for the work I do or have done but the point is doing what is within my power. My father and his wife typically have to plan things a week in advance for them to do on the one day out of any week that he's home with her and his one day a week could be a thursday - sunday. I've already tried offering to pay for them to go see a movie but they make thier plans for the one day a week they have with eachother while he's on the road for the week.

What I've done for my dad and his wife includes everything from new tires to tuneups on thier cars to upgrading the cpu, ram and optical drive on my dads laptop ( since he uses it everyday on the road ) and I've upgraded my step-mothers PC to make less noise while running faster and such.

I take it you guys never heard the saying "It's the little things that count" . I believe the modem falls in that category ;)

From a modem point of view External Modem is the Best.

115K is the speed of the serial port the actual Modem transfer cannot go above 53K.

"Dirty" Tel. lines reduce the "Speed".

Laying a new cable from the NID directly to the Modem with no phone on this specific cable sometimes can help.

Many times the Telco neighborhood lines are "dirty", and then nothing would help.

External modems can also typically deal better with noise on the lines and give a more reliable connection.

I've seen cases where people in the country who lived next to poorly grounded electric fences would have issues getting disconnected and a hardware modem resolving it.
