A decent OS. i.e. nothing in the Win9X line.

All you do by installing those programs is hurt performance, they take up more memory running than they'll be able to free for you.

Amen. Those programs are pure snake oil, regardless of what their web sites say.

Buying more ram would be a better idea. It doesn't cost much.
Weird software programs that mess with system stuff are just going to add more points of failure to your machine.

AMEN-- windows, esp the 9x/ME series eat it hardcore. NT=better, but, well, is still NT. Win2000/XP=not too bad at all.
