Can you do $159.99? The reviews should start coming in tonight or tomorrow. This card looks to replace the 4890. Should be quite the performer in it's price range.

The 1GB 4870's are very solid performers in that price range.

If you want to go Nvidia and don't mind rebates this GTX260 is a good option as well.

What resolution to you game at? Answering that will help a lot in giving you the best option. But out of those my guess is that 5770 is the fastest and has the best features, though it is $10 more than what you wanted to pay. Anyway, there are a few options in that price range.

1280x1024 (or somewhere close to that)
I want a graphics card that can run games like CoD5, farcry 2 and crysis.

Also i heard the GTX260 is good but will i need a intel core i7 like other models from nvidia?

slowSpyder: for the 159.99$ model it was 200MHz in memory clock is this a major factor

The 5770 is the latest and greatest midrange card with direct x 11
It has more features and just a notch below the gtx260 performance.
For 1280x1024 the 5770 would be perfect for you and is worth going a little over your budget.

The 5770 was just listed an hour ago so you are just in time.

Edit: There will be loads of reviews for the 5770 in the next 24 hours.
So just wait a bit and you will see.

I beleive that card has something around 76Gb/s bandwidth... plenty of speed. It shows at 1200MHz for me. That core is similar to the 4890 in that it has 800 stream processors at 850MHz, plus all the bells and whistles that come with the new Radeon 5xxx cards. Chances are that card will be on par to faster than a GTX260. The reviews should start pouring in soon, I believe the official launch of that card is tomorrow.

The 4870 1GB and GTX260 (216 core) are very close to one another in performance, they are basically equals, one is sometimes faster than the other and vice versa depending on game and resolution. The 4890 is a small step above both of those cards. The 5770, I'm guessing - we'll see the reviews tomorrow - will fit somewhere between the 4870 1GB/GTX260 and the 4890.

The 5770 will be more than enough for your resolution. In truth, you could probably get by with a lot less card for 1280x1024 and save some money. Look at Nvidia GTS250's, Radeon 4830's, 4850's and 5750's. Any of those should do well enough at that resoution and save you money. The advantage of the Radeon 57x0 card is that you get DX11 capability.

did you really not know that 1200mhz for gddr5 is 4800mhz effective?

Yes I did know that. He said that he saw the memory as 200MHz, Newegg lists it at1200MHz when I checked... and yes, I'm aware that it's effectively 4800MHz, though a 128bit connection on the 5770. My guess is that will be enough bandwidth for most situations, it'll have no problem at his resolution.

I'd probably just find the cheapest 4850 and stick with that for that res. They can be had for as low as 90$.

why would you need an i7 for Nvidia cards?? anyway, the 5770 will have basically the same performance as the 4870 and gtx260 while using much less power.

you still never listed what the rest of your specs are.

In the review I read the 5750 is besting the gts250 (=4850) thats not a bad choice for 129.00$. Remember this is with early drivers and It seemed to shine even better with direct x 11.

hmmm...

I'd wait a day or two and look at the reviews of 5770 and 5750, they should have plenty of comparisons with gts250, 4850, 48870 and gtx 260 in them.

Yeah, except a 4850 can be had for $90... so $40 more for roughly equivalent performance from the 5750... there are some reasons to swing that, but its a little tough. Just had a client order a 4850 today for their build after seeing the reviews.

If you have the PSU, the choice is easy, but if you're on a stock OEM PSU, the choice is easy the other way.

yes at that price I get a hd5750, dx11 ready. some initial benchmarks show dx11 code path run about 15-20% than dx10 which means you get better visuals with dx11. but if you can get a hd4850 for cheap go for it. i got mine for 80AR, someone else bought it at 67AR. it's just a great card for the cash.
