What's the best linux-flashable router?

I'm looking to get one of those nifty linux-flashable routers, and i'm not sure which one to get.

I've heard the the linksys WRT54G is really good, and I know where I can get a v2 in trade, but I'm not sure which hardware version of the router I should go for (other than v5 is bad). Are there any other routers I should be looking at? Is the GS any better? Or is another brand better?

I also hear there's a new version... GL or something? How does that compare?

I figure as long as I'm going to take the plunge and invest, I might as well get the best one i can.

Thanks!

GS has Speedbooster which boasts 33% gains in network speed. Most people like the GS because the older models have twice the storage space as the G series. I think the new GS may have the same memory as the G though.

AFAIK, afterburner is even enabled on WRT54G with custom built firmware like DD-WRT. Only other thing the GS offers over the G is double the ram and maybe a faster processor (I don't think so though). I would personally just go with the G and save 30 bucks.

There are other models that can run DD-WRT firmware. Here. However, I would personally go for a WRT54G.

so then -- there's no difference between the WRTG and the WRTGS if they're both hardware v2? (those are the two routers i'm looking at swiping from friends... 🙂)

EDIT for typo
