Brother mfc8420 is the best printer I've ever owned and it's only $550.

I had an HP LJ3100 and what a POS. Not only did HP not allow free driver downloads (CD for xp/2000 cost $20) the printer took random amonuts of paper and jammed all the time. Also, it's software was annoying. HP sucks.

I have a HP 3330 & love it, not exactly high volume in my home environment, but it's seriously handy...

What main features do you need from a multifunction device? Do you mainly need the printer and scanner? Is the copying the main part? Fax?

Reason why i'm asking is because i was really looking into a MFD myself a month ago and realized there is no really good one out there. There's something pretty bad about each one out there. I decided it was better to buy the machines separately. Obviously i can't afford to buy them all at once, but i'll buy one each month.

We, wife & I use all the features of the 3330, the sheet feeder for scanning copying is great. We've run maybe 5 reams of paper through it, printing, scanning, faxing, copying. My biggest complaint is that it's huge, but we haven't had a minute's problem with it. While it's bigger than I like, it's footprint is considerably smaller than what the seperate components would be.

I unwittingly pricematched Staples for this printer against a 3300 @ Outpost, & got it for ~$400, honestly didn't realize it till I got home & looked more closely.

I dislike most of the consumer fax machines, especially the ones that use a film/ink system, they're a PITA to reload & expensive.

HP has software & firmware updates listed on their site for the 3300 series, looked up Carbonyl's printer & sure enough, they don't have the drivers listed for his printer...

For copying, it narrows down the companies alot. Mainly canon makes them, but some other companies might make a couple. You can check out some prices and pics here link

For laser printer reviews you can check out cnet or

pcworld

And for fax machines i really recommend the panasonic ones 'cause i bought one (in black) and with a cordless phone attached and it's great. link
