Have a diamond max now but everyone raves over the IBM deskstar. My brother has a 45 gig and he says it is much faster than his old WD.

I am so sorry to resurrect this thread but I am really curious to know which drives are really the best drives. Anandtech says to get an IBM 75GXP so I get one and everyone is having problems with theirs. This is making me worry. I've had mine a month with no problems but I hope that will continue on. So, other than the IBM 75GXP is there a drive comparable? And does anyone know if the 60GXP is having the same problems as the 75GXP?
Thanks,

I also heard (read) all sorta horror stories from ppl with IBM´s 75GXP, 45GB and others too. Check out storagereview.com forums and you will know what I mean.
I was about to spend the extra cash and buy an ibm, but after all these trouble, I will rather stick with a quantum plus AS (I´ll buy one soon) or maxtor diamond plus...I don´t want no trouble or rma from ibm, thank you very much.

Of course you will only hear from ppl who has problems, but hey, ibm´s deskstar seem to be causing lots of trouble...I don´t see that many ppl complaining about their maxtor, fujitsu, quantum, etc...

I know that there are ppl quite happy with their 75GXP though...but why run the risk ?

I'd go with a Maxtor Diamondmax 7200 rpm, if price isn't that much of a priority go for the new IBM 60 GXP. I'd stay away from the 75's..heard too much. I've used Maxtors for over 7 years and haven't had any problems whatsoever..:D

According to Storage Review the IBM DeskStart 60GXP is the best drive (I've heard alot of good things about it as well) and is the current top of their 7200rpm IDE Leader Board.

I love my 75GXP (Deskstars)....

But I'd give the Maxtor Diamond Max Plus 60 a whirl (watch for the plus, the Dmax is 5400rpm...you defaintely want DMax+) they are suppose to be very very quiet. My 75GXPs aren't exactly loud, and not enough to bother me. But they aren't dead silent either.

I'm not saying these are the best drives but I in all honesty have never, I mean never had a problem with them and they are quite fast IMO.

I have the Quantum Fireball KA+. It seems to do the job exceptionally. However, thorin mentioned the GXP60's which I also read the same review from Storage Review and there supposed to be the GXP75's replacement.

"Wtf guys.. why the 75GXP when the new 60GXP is out and better?"

Because they haven't heard/experienced problems with the 75GXP. And they didn't realize that IBM has replaced the 75GXP line with the new 60GXP line.
