Yes, Storage Review is one of the best sites for HDD reviews. Looks like the Maxtor MaXLine III series is the desktop leader at the moment. The Hitachi 7K400 and 7K250 series were the previous leaders in the past two quarters.
maxtor's diamondmax 10s are really fast (16MB buffer) and they have IDE flavors. You have to get the 250 or 300GB versions, though. You could probably get the 250GB version for like $120 on ebay - i got the 300GB SATA for $140. They are quiet, too, because of fluid bearings.
