Why would you buy any GTX 980? GTX 970 gives you practically the same gaming experience, as it's only ~11-14% slower (depending on resolution). This is not a difference you'll actually notice outside of benchmarking.

However, your wallet will certainly notice the difference in paying 589€ for the Gigabyte GTX 980 G1 versus 379€ for a Gigabyte GTX 970. That's 210€ or 36% cheaper!

It's actually 15% slower minimum, and 20% slower if you compare factory OC'd cards against each other.

To the OP: I would go with EVGA B-Stock GTX 980. You can get some of them for 350-400 euros. Never buy Classified.
Any ACX 2.0 GPU from EVGA will be more than enough. You can overclock all of them quite decently. Just go to EVGA's EU website and have a look. You only get 1 year warranty, but that has never been an issue from what I've seen.

Those prices in your links are way too high.

On what basis do you dismiss Techpowerup's results?

EDIT.
From the computerbase.de article:
GTX 980 -> 100%
GTX 970 -> 87%

13% slower, not 15%. 13% is 2% more than the 11% that you get from Techpowerup's tests on 1080p. I'd say 2% is within the margin of error here.

Where? The only B-Stock 980 in EVGA store is GTX 980 SC ACX 2.0 for 419€ - far from being worth buying compared to a B-Stock GTX 970 SC ACX 2.0 for 279€ (34% cheaper).

I agree that the GTX 980 is not worth it. It's way too expensive for what you're getting. The GTX 970 is a better value.

If you must get a GTX 980, the EVGA GTX 980 ACX is not bad. Plus, the warranty is pretty good.

I bought a 780ti a while ago, the gpu broke and I had warranty, they couldnt fix it so they gave me an option to choose a new gpu, the 780ti cost me 700€ so I have 700€ to waste, thats why Im going the 980.

Alright, so you guys just think the 680€ version of the card is not worth ? Its better to go with the 580€ like the G1 version?

In that case only 2 options make sense:

Option 1: Mid-range stop-gap such as 970/390;

Option 2: All in on 980Ti.

980 makes no sense from a performance or price/performance perspective given the prices you listed. If you have 700 Euro laying around, add a bit and get the Gigabyte G1 980Ti for 759 Euro. Otherwise, go with Option 1, set aside the difference (i.e., savings) towards a next generation GPU upgrade. Selling the card from Option 1 and getting a new 16nm HBM2 card in 2016-2017 is also a good strategy.

Another way to look at it is from this perspective:

GTX 970 SLI = 732 Euro and that setup beats 980 by 56% at 1440P.

Sorry, but 980 is a bad purchase given your price data and considering that you have 700 Euro given to you from warranty claims. If they will not let you take the 700 Euro and add the 59 Euro on top to get the 980Ti G1, then go with Option 1.

Can you add money on top of it to get something else? If you can, I wouldn't hesitate to grab a GTX 980 TI. It would be WELL WORTH IT. Looks like the Gigabyte GTX 980 TI G1 is 759,90€. I would say that's worth it.

If not, yeah, get the Gigabyte GTX 980 G1 and pocket the money. But, I would just grab a GTX 970 and pocket the money, instead.

Definitely spend that little bit extra for a 980 Ti. You pay less than 10% more for more than 30% more performance.

Just to add to the pro-980 Ti voices, I'm all for it. But choose another card than the Gigabyte. It has noise issues(via Sweclockers). The best card is the EVGA one. The MSI is also decent.

^ Mondozei, keep in mind that the Gigabyte G1 980Ti is loud because it has a very aggressive stock fan profile. If we look at max temps of that card, there is a good 10-15*C to play with to lower fan speeds and get those noise levels way down. This means in practice, the card can be made much quieter and still be well under NV's 84C boost control limit boundary.
