Well, I've got about $500 that I can spend on a new monitor, so I need some advice on what to get. DVI is not mandatory, but I would prefer it. I will be playing first person shooters, so I'd like a nice gaming monitor with a response time no higher than 16ms. Lets hear it guys!

BenQ 767-12. Great black and great colors, 12ms response time, 17". I'm really pleased with it.

The Samsung 712N-2 looks pretty good too, but its hard to gauge its visuals from the BB demos. :( Its not the same specs as the BenQ tho.

What do you guys think of the Sony SDM-S74? Sounds like it's getting some good reviews from gamers, and I've always been a fan of Sony's products.

Sony SDM-S74

Also been reading about the Viewsonic VP171 which is around the same price and has about the same specs as the Sony. Newegg doesn't have it in stock right now, but I'm sure that won't last too long.

Just got back from looking at the Sony HS74P. Nice looking monitor, I'm a little concerned though about the reflective screen.

I agree... the samsungs have a beautiful display... bright and crisp. Can't go wrong. Keep an eye out for the new Benq with 8ms coming out, or already out in your area. (The FP71G+). Maybe it'll look great... personally I haven't seen it yet.

And do they perform about the same?

710T is the best available gaming lcd under $500. I have two friends that have them and they are fanfreakingtastic

Get a Dell 2001FP (20") for ~$560. Look around for some coupons (25% off & $40 off) and you should be able to score a really nice 20" at a damn good price. ;)

Here's what I just bought:

BenQ 16ms and DVI

It will be $359 after rebate. My budget was less than $400. This monitor seemed like the best one in my price range, with 16 ms repsonse and DVI. We use manily BedQ LCDs at work and they have been very good.

Wow, that BenQ does sound like a pretty nice monitor for the price. I had just about narrowed down my selection to either a Samsung 710T or a Viewsonic VP171, but now I'm going to do some research on the BenQ.

Thanks everyone for all of your suggestions, please keep them coming.

that benq is a pretty sweet LCD.. true 16ms... great brilliance... I'd get it from buy.com instead of newegg... shipping may be a little slower but they have a better dead pixel return policy.. the CS rep told me I could exchange it for a new one even if it has just 1 dead pixel... and they'll pay for the shipping:

My VP171B met my expectations. In fact, it does text so well I have a hard time going back to good AG CRTs.

I really do like the look of the VP171, although I'd prefer the Silver since I'm getting a silver case. The only retail store I've found that sells them is CompUSA, but they're a good bit more expensive than Newegg. I think they wanted $479 with a $50 rebate, while they are $385 (black only) on newegg. At that price it's about the same as the 710T, but once again I can't find those at any retail stores either. I'd really like to check out the monitor before I buy it out of fear of dead pixels.

MrPabulum - Where did you buy yours at how long ago? I assume that you don't have any issues with ghosting?

Sony SDM-S74

I bought this in early November when newegg dropped it's price to $389 and have been pleased with its performance. Plays HL2, MOH:pA and WoW just fine with no noticeable ghosting using the DVI input. I was considering replacing it when the Dellf coupons came out with one of the 20" Dell monitors, but decided to stand pat. Good monitor, IMHO.

Hey, thanks for the info. I was beginning to think that nobody owned this monitor! Is the screen on this one reflective like the new XBrite Sony's? I really don't like the glare on the newer screens, so I'd like to know if the older models have the same problems.
