I just got ahold of the WRT54G version 8. I heard the newer versions are bad because they have non-removeable antennas and less ram for firmware options. I was wondering what firmware is the best firmware that I could use. I remember there was firmware that actually gave this routher the abilities of a 2 to 3 hundrend dollar router. Like the ability to search for other signals and such.

Is there any 3rd party firmware for the 8.0 version.

I used to use hyperwrtg, but switched back to the Linksys firmware since they've made so many advances... I've had my router 3 years so if yours is of any age, they've really made some changes.

i switched to dd-wrt... tomato was giving me odd problems, like not feeding DHCP to some of my computers. It would see them, but none of the computers would accept an IP. I also realized B/G mixed mode didn't work.

Switched to dd-wrt and all is good now :)

Altho, since you have version 8, I think the dd-wrt is only in beta for that right now.

I have version 6...the DDWRT for it was pretty watered down, so I just switched back to the OEM linksys firmware.

My V5 was 94% WORTHLESS out of the box. You'd rather use dial-up than try to access the internet through it.
I managed to get DD-WRT loaded on it, and it's been working beautifully since then.

same with my v5. Updated to the latest firmware after I got it, but still would drop torrents and generally not do things right. Switched to DD-WRT micro and everything's A-OK.

I have a WRT-54GL with DD-WRT and a Buffalo with Tomato. Both work very well - depending on what you plan on doing there might not be any practical difference.
